🏒 Celebrating two members of our #UCalgaryMed community: Drs. Laura Bennion, MD, and Ian Auld, MD, who served as the lead physicians supporting athlete health and readiness for Team Canada’s women’s and men’s Olympic hockey teams at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

This married duo are family physicians, educators, and longtime leaders in high‑performance sport medicine and they set a powerful example of where a career in family medicine can take you.

Dr. Bennion, who also practices obstetrics and gynecology, has supported Hockey Canada’s medical teams for years, helping prepare athletes through several Olympic cycles. Milano Cortina 2026 marked the first time that she joined the women’s team on the ground.

Drawing on decades of experience, Dr. Auld has also played a pivotal role in supporting Hockey Canada, along with the Calgary Flames, in areas such as team planning, injury management and supporting both players and their families.

From community clinics to delivering babies to elite sport medicine, family medicine provides a foundation that can take physicians in many directions, sometimes all the way to the Olympics and Team Canada.

Proud to see Drs. Bennion and Auld bring their expertise to the world stage, supporting Team Canada’s hockey programs through another Olympic podium finish!

Friday Hockey Poetry

It is what it is
It is what it means
It is an unbelievably beautiful thing.
It is for you and it is for me
It is for everyone who can or cannot see.
You may not be present but you will agree
It benefits you and it benefits me.

Movement is key to my mental fitness.

The team at Group23 Sports Medicine has been a huge reason why I’m able to continue pursuing athletics. They take the lessons learned from treating top athletes and bring that same level of care to everyone—because feeling your best matters.

Movement creates clarity.

When you’re on a run, a ride, or just moving, it’s not about making a plan—it’s about letting priorities come into focus. Exercise fuels your body, clears your mind, and creates a space to think about what really matters.

Movement is mental health.

It’s not just about fitness—it’s about finding clarity and balance. When everything feels off, moving your body can be the reset you need. Whether it’s a run, a walk, or something else, it’s a way to center yourself in a busy world.
