Talking with my big little brother

I’m the older brother, but he’s built a life I’ve always been proud of.

He became a fireman, built a successful life

And at the same time had to watch his older brother go down a completely different road.

He talks about how there were years when he couldn’t really be around me because of the drugs, the crime, and the life I was living.

I know that had to be hard, to love your brother but not want any part of the world he was choosing.

So hearing him say today that he’s proud of me means more than I can explain.

He’s seen where I came from.

He knows the man I used to be.

And now he gets to see the man I fought to become.

Sometimes your transformation isn’t just about changing your own life

It’s about becoming someone the people you love can finally be proud to stand beside.

Love you, little brother.

Proud of you too.
