The crucial work of social and humanitarian organizations on the ground supporting programs for livelihood, education, inclusion of marginalized communities, disaster relief, and democratic participation is often being improved with digital technologies and increasingly AI-based systems. While AI holds significant potential to benefit society, realizing that potential requires confronting the risks and threats associated with its development and use.

This panel session explores the role of effective policies, practices and regulation in fostering innovation in the social and humanitarian sectors, while safeguarding the principles of equity, inclusion, civic agency, and environmental sustainability.

Across the United Nations system, efforts are underway to develop frameworks that ensure AI aligns with the UN’s vision for a more inclusive and sustainable future. Yet significant challenges remain.

Addressing the social, environmental, and safety risks of AI requires collective deliberation, interdisciplinary research, and coordinated action across sectors and societies. UN organizations and international NGOs are at the center of these conversations connecting diverse voices to shape AI that serves people and the planet.

Excited to announce our opening keynotes at the Contestations.AI Transdisciplinary Symposium on AI, Human Rights, and Warfare, October 23, 2024.

The Realities of Algorithmic Warfare and Civilian Harm by Lauren Gould, Assistant Professor in Conflict Studies and Jessica Dorsey, Assistant Professor of International and European Law at Algorithmic Realities of Warfare, Utrecht University

Investigating Technologies of War & Surveillance: A Human Laboratory of Oppression and Control by Antony Loewenstein, Investigative Journalist, Author and Filmmaker, The Palestine Laboratory & Disaster Capitalism

As project leaders of the Realities of Algorithmic Warfare, Lauren and Jessica will reflect on how AI is increasing the speed of warfare and scale of destruction across contemporary battlefields and what pressing (research) questions this raises. They will be presenting alongside groundbreaking investigative journalist Antony Loewenstein, who wrote the book and hosts the podcast The Palestine Laboratory.

I’ve spent time getting to know Lauren and Jessica’s emerging initiatives while in Utrecht recently, and have known Antony for many years as a dear friend whose work I’ve deeply admired, so I’m so happy we are hosting them to open our symposium.

The keynotes (9:45 - 11:00) will anchor the crucial themes we will explore in our 4 stellar panel sessions that follow, critically engaging interdisciplinary perspectives from our awesome lineup of speakers. All sessions will be live-streamed. Follow our event updates @contestations.ai and see the full program + register here: https://Contestations.AI

The symposium takes place just before the United Nations Day on October 24th. It is supported in-part by the Finnish Institute in the Middle East, Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT), Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI) and AaltoAI.

Introducing Aurora Navarro Villacampa @aurora.nv & her project "Dwellers of the Memory Palace".

As the way we work, learn, and play evolves, so must our homes and the roles they enact in our lives. The process of redefining our domestic space and our relation to it was already in motion when it was sped up by the lockdowns that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. The closing of the entertainment and cultural sectors left us alone with our thoughts and spending more time at home returned our attention to our daily routines within it.

In a light and humorous tone, the website Dwellers of the Memory Palace invites the participant to rediscover their domestic space by engaging with it through a series of uplifting self-reflections. Quirky routine modifications, embodiment and multi-sensory triggers build a real-life memory palace for guidance and meditation, finding metaphors, poetry and advice in our everyday actions.
