We now understand precisely why certain iridescent makeup products cause a ‘glitch’ effect through a camera lens.

Through those findings, we now also understand how best to amplify the glitch in camera, so that these products can be used to their greatest effect as a special effects makeup for a character in a film that my partner Glenn Fraser and I are currently working on.

We’ve given the camera companies some time to comment on how their cameras reacted to the glitch before we post the results. We’ll report our findings and explanation for the glitch very soon.

Stay tuned for the workshop results, and more glitch tests coming up soon - from the Glitch Witch 💋

What causes the mysterious “Glitter Glitch” in a camera?

The Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) @austcine Technical Committee recently sat down with filmmakers Amelia Foxton and Glenn Fraser to investigate this elusive phenomenon.

And we have some exciting updates:
We found the answer,
We can reproduce it,
We know how to avoid it,
We analysed how different “grown-up”
cameras handle the issue.

A full breakdown and comprehensive report will be coming soon.

Stay tuned!

Documented and produced by Amelia Foxton @ameliafoxton and Glenn Fraser @azathoth101

Grown-up cameras operated by Susan Lumsdon @nlp47 and Pawel Achtel ACS @pawel.achtel.

Thank you to the awesome team at The Front @thefront118 for your support and for allowing us use of your space and equipment.

Behold the ‘Glitter Glitch’, brought to you by the Glitter Witch ✨

Follow me, and I’ll take you on a strange and colour-shifting journey, whereupon the age old question shall be answered -

How do you compel a group of world-class cinematographers to gather - over glitter? ✨

Follow the Blue Fairy 🧚‍♂️

For those who don’t know, I’ve dabbled in makeup artistry - mostly SFX for film, and avant-garde for editorial photography.

In a recent re-awakening of my makeup enthusiasm, I stumbled upon iridescent multichrome eyeshadows with an ultraviolet shift.

And I kept seeing these fabulous ‘glitching’ effects in the videos about them.

Why do cameras ‘glitch’ over glitter? This test on my iPhone 16 Pro Max shows that it occurs in a range of conditions.

Why?

As a filmmaker, a makeup enthusiast and an AuDHD creative, this glitch has activated an epic hyper fixation journey - that I’ll show-and-tell in the coming weeks.

What has resulted is an Australian Cinematographer’s Society tech committee testing workshop, coming up in late August, arranged by my friend @pawel.achtel - where the glitter glitch shall be explored with film cameras such as Arri LF, S35, Venice 2 and Red, and even Pawel’s incredible Achtel 9x7 camera, one of the most exclusive and uniquely engineered cameras ever made.

So far, we have heard a range of theories about the glitch, but no consensus. Do you have a theory?

Stay tuned. There will be updates!

Products I purchased for testing: (with my money - no affiliation/sponsorship):

Clionadh’s ‘Myrrh’, ‘UV’, ‘LS 2’, ‘Lux’ & ‘Gilding’
Cloudicos’ ‘Moon Princess’, ‘Arcane’, ‘Flux’ & ‘Lunar’
Adriana Nichole’s ‘Unique’
Dieverune’s ‘Drop’, ‘Necromancy’, ‘Transmutation’, ‘All Hallows Eve’, ‘Luminous Lunar’, ‘Wild Wisteria’ & ‘Stray Cat’
Ourbella’s ‘Aphrodite’, ‘Lucid Dream’, ‘Solar Rush’ & ‘Cosmic Siren’
Sheen Effect’s ‘Night Elf’, ‘Pure Desire’ & ‘Candy Wrappers’
Blend Bunny’s ‘Ellis Atlantis’ palette

An epic iridescent comparison swatch party glitch-off will follow soon! Stay tuned!
