Zamek Liechtensteinów w Maria Enzersdorfie 🇦🇹
Lichtenstein Castle in Maria Enzersdorf

The castle, built between 1122 and 1136 by Hugo von Weikersdorf, derives its name from the light-colored rock it stands on. It gave rise to the Liechtenstein family, with Hugo von Liechtenstein as its progenitor. Since the late 13th century, the castle changed owners. It was destroyed by the Turks in 1529, but its fate was sealed by another Turkish invasion in 1683. Since then, it has remained in ruins. Notably, from 1799 to 1808, it was owned by Prince Stanisław Poniatowski, nephew of the King of Poland Stanisław August Poniatowski. In 1808, Prince Johann Joseph von Liechtenstein repurchased it, and its reconstruction was completed in 1884 by his grandson, Prince Johann II. Today, the castle remains in the possession of the Princes of Liechtenstein and is open to visitors.

ZAMEK LIECHTENSTEINÓW w RIEGERSBURGU 🇦🇹
LIECHTENSTEIN CASTLE in RIEGERSBURG

One of the castle legends is associated with the witch hunts that took place in the 17th century. When the lady of the castle was Baroness Katharina Elisabeth von Geller, née von Wechsler, she took Katharina Paldauf into her service. Katharina had a fondness for flowers and, according to legend, was happiest when she could water her roses and converse with her carnations and daisies. The flowers supposedly reciprocated Katharina’s care by budding and blooming well before their time, becoming a true feast for the eyes. This was said to happen even in the middle of winter, when snow still lay on the castle’s battlements, and her flowers blossomed beautifully. When people noticed what Katharina had accomplished, perhaps out of jealousy or fear, they brought her to trial, accusing her of witchcraft and dealings with the devil. Her trial took place in Feldbach, where she was burned at the stake in 1675, labeled as the Blumenhexe - Flower Witch.

Zamek Liechtensteinów w Riegersburgu 🇦🇹
Liechtenstein Castle in Riegersburg

W latach 1637-1653 ukończyła ona budowę zamku, czyniąc go jednym z największych i najsilniejszych zamków w kraju. Zamek jest otoczony 3 km murem. W 1822 r. zamek nabył książę Johann von Liechtenstein i do dziś stanowi własność książąt Liechtenstein. Obecnie książę Emanuel von Liechtenstein z rodziną mieszka w wiosce poniżej, a w zamku działa Muzeum Książęcej Rodziny Liechtenstein.

The first mention of a castle built on an extinct volcano dates back to 1138, where the name “Ruotkerspurch” appears, likely deriving from its then owner, Knight Rüdiger von Hohenberg. The castle later changed hands multiple times, including the Kuenring-Dürnstein family and the Wechsler family, with the most notable owner being Baroness Katharina Elisabeth von Wechsler. Between 1637 and 1653, she completed the construction of the castle, making it one of the largest and strongest castles in the country. The castle is surrounded by a 3 km wall. In 1822, the castle was acquired by Prince Johann von Liechtenstein and remains in the possession of the Liechtenstein family to this day. Currently, Prince Emanuel von Liechtenstein and his family reside in the village below, while the Castle operates as the Liechtenstein Princely Family Museum.

🦄Jelenleg is a Wilcek család tulajdona, a leszármazottak igazgatják a várat. 😉
