We’ve put nine questions to the Volleyball Australia Board and CEO, copying in Volleyball Queensland, and asked them to answer each one separately, in writing, by Monday, 2 November. We look forward to hearing from them.

Australia’s referee accreditation system is a joke and
it’s time to fix it.

A bad call is one thing.
Not knowing the rule is another.

Nobody expects referees to be perfect. Close calls get missed. Fast rallies are hard to judge. Human error happens.

But why can someone get accredited before they’ve actually proved they can referee?

That’s the problem.

This isn’t an attack on good refs. Good refs deserve better training, clearer progression, more support and better pay.

But accreditation should mean something.

It should mean:

you know the rules.
you’ve been tested.
you’ve been assessed.
you can apply those rules in a real match.

Course completion is not the same as competence.

If someone can officiate senior club, school honours and state divisional matches, shouldn’t they have to prove practical ability first?

Players train for months.
Coaches spend hundreds of hours preparing.
Families spend money travelling and supporting teams.

One whistle can change:
a point → a set → a match → a season.

So the standard of officiating should matter too.

Other systems use written exams, practical exams, supervised experience and progression requirements before officials move up.

Why can’t Australia expect the same?

Make the accreditation harder to earn.
Make the pathway worth progressing through.
Then pay good referees more.

Raise the training.
Raise the assessment.
Raise the pay.
Raise the standard.

Seen the same problem?
Comment below. Share this with your teammates, coaches and refs.

Well done! to @aps_sport Rep and @wesleycollege_melbourne Year 12 student Alaska Emney who has had an exciting year on the volleyball court!

During the mid-year school holidays, Alaska represented Victoria at the U19 National Championships, helping the team win gold for the second consecutive year.

She then travelled to Vietnam with the U20 Australian Performance Pathway team, gaining valuable international experience against Vietnamese teams, including former professional players, as the squad prepares for the 2027 Asia Championships.

Alaska’s volleyball journey began at Wesley in Year 8, when she was selected to play for the @wesleycollege_melbourne's Firsts team. Since then, she has progressed to Club, State and now national representation.

As Co-Captain of Wesley’s volleyball team, Alaska has also helped nurture the next generation of players, sharing her experience and supporting her teammates.

‘Wesley Volleyball has taught me so much, not just about skill, but about how to play in a team and help lead a group,’ said Alaska. ‘We had a lot of new girls join the team this year and it was great to be part of their development.’

We’re proud to see Alaska’s dedication and passion opening doors to new opportunities and look forward to following her volleyball journey!

Congrats Alaska!! 👏👏👏
