A Friend Named Grief: A Poetry Collection by Thalia Clem

A poetry collection that explores grief not as something to conquer, but as a companion to be understood. Through reflections on loss and healing, Thalia Clem invites readers to find hope alongside sorrow.

This debut collection surprised me with how deeply personal it was. Thalia shares experiences of unimaginable loss with so much vulnerability. It almost felt like reading a mini memoir.

What I connected with were the poems about her grandparents. I have fond memories of my own, so those pieces resonated with me in a special way. I also thought the artwork throughout the book was beautiful and complemented the poems well.

Even in its darkest moments, the perspective on grief felt hopeful, as though grief itself became something that carried the author forward rather than pulled her under.

“The Wind Still Carries Her Name” is the second collection of poetry from Thalia Clem. This is her most personal collection yet, and is really more of a chapbook, dedicated to her grandmother.

The poems were beautiful and vulnerable and written with so much love and adoration and gratitude. Whereas her debut focused on the darker aspects of loss and grief, this sees the narrator looking back fondly on a person who helped raise and shape them.

Again, recommended. #poetrylovers✒️ #poetry_addicts #poetryislife #poem

“A Friend Named Grief” is the debut poetry collection from Thalia Clem, and it explores pain, loss, and grief. In it we are taken through 3 main Movements as we navigate grief with our narrator traveling from childhood wounds and trauma, into adolescence and adulthood, and breaking generational trauma to find peace and a sense of growth and acceptance.

This was a beautiful collection of poetry in the best ways the medium can be used. The poems are raw and emotional and reflective and immensely personal, I can imagine, to the author. We are taken through several painful poems of childhood, navigating death and loss and grief—the pains of the family we are born into and the joys in the family we find and cultivate along the way. The answers we never get and the ones we wish we never knew.

This is a journey of healing from pain, recognizing how it shapes us into who we are today, and finding ways to learn and grow as we move forward in life. An author I admire once wrote “pain demands to be felt”. And that’s what this collection does so well.

“I have come to befriend grief…
…she walks beside me,
not as an adversary,
but as a companion who has much to teach”

This was a beautiful collection of pain and loss, but also hope and resilience and growth. And the realization that even in our darkest moments, there are still lessons to learn, things to teach, and ways to grow. Love to give and receive.

And grief can be our guide along the way.

Highly recommended. #poetry #poetrylovers✒️ #poetry_addicts #poetryislife

Scrolling is easy.
Showing up as an author? That’s a different game.

Most books don’t struggle because they’re bad…
They struggle because they’re unseen.

This #socialsaturday, let’s change that.

👇 Introduce yourself: – What book are you working on?
– What are you building as an author?
– What are you learning right now?

Then do something most people won’t do…
Engage. Connect. Support another author.

Because visibility grows through connection.

And if you’re ready to take things further —
from writing… to being seen and read:

It has been a revelation for me to discover the work of @authorthaliaclem. This particular poem of hers has just captured me. I wanted to make some music for the poem to live in and speak it, as I take it in, up at the creek not far from where I live. And share that with Thalia and the world…thank you for doing what you do! It means the world to me. #poetry #poems #poetrycommunity

What a great couple of hours reading poetry!! Oh my goodness, I don't even think I knew how much time had passed. It was a small and preferred crowd and I'm very appreciative of those of you that popped in to say hi and those of you that stuck around great conversation. I'd gladly do it again. Anyone has any suggestions or wants to do it together just let me know. That was awesome! Thank you so much! I'm so fortunate to know such talented writers that allow me to share their work 💚
