Autistic children are at an increased risk for wandering out of the house, or school. This can be extremely scary for parents and caregivers. Children might wander out of the house and across a busy street or get lost in the neighborhood. It is important to put preventative measures in place so that our children stay safe.

Expert, Dr. Kim Kroeger wrote an article for Autism Advocate Parenting Magazine outlining preventative measures and intervention strategies. She gives suggestions like teaching hand-holding and using identification bracelets. This article is a must-read if your child is a wanderer. Have you heard of Gestalt Language Development?

This type of language development is not the traditional analytic language development, but instead is a type of language development that uses delayed echolalia, scripting, comprehension and is then followed by self-generated language.

#COREGULATION

Repost• @brody.the.lion Yesterday's post was about RRB’s (Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors). Accepting & Embracing Autism does not mean we never say no or need to redirect. Stim is not bad. Repetitive behaviors are not wrong. Sometimes, however, these behaviors require redirection. If your child is squeezing and emptying bottles of toothpaste, shampoo, ketchup, syrup – this is not something that you can just let happen. If your child’s stim causes harm or damage to self, others, or property, we need to intervene.

The key is HOW we intervene. For some of our kids, saying “no” to the ketchup bottle or asking a child to stop, causes a BIG Meltdown that is worse than the behavior you were trying to stop. How do we support an autistic child who insists on repetitive routines, restricted behaviors, or other needs? One word – Co-Regulation.

Co-Regulation is teaches a child to regulate by responding in a way that provides support, modeling, and coaching. Co-Regulation is extremely difficult because it requires the adult to be aware of their own emotions and regulate themselves before responding and supporting your child.

Co-Regulation is NOT just comforting or consoling. Co-Regulation teaches a child to recognize their own thoughts and feelings AND be validated to express those feelings. Teaches a child to self-sooth though different means including: Tactile (stress balls, water, slime, blankets, fidgets), Auditory (music, rhythms), visual (pictures, videos, bubbles, visualization), proprioceptive (yoga, jumping, squeezing, dancing). Co-Regulation teaches Problem Solving skills.

In addition to spreading awareness and acceptance of autism and all abilities, another reason I wrote the Brody Books was to provide hands on tools for children and parents. We use our Brody Plushie on a daily basis. We wear Brody t-shits and sweatshirts so they can see Brody Roar. They see him get frustrated, They see him practice mindful breathing. They see him happy. They see his parents and friends support him. We talk about and model different triggers and ways to cope. Each book has tips and tools in the story as well a parent section.

#RESTRICTED #REPETITIVE #BEHAVIOURS

RRBs are a Coping Mechanism NOT bad or wrong!

An Autism diagnosis is given when a child, adolescent or adult demonstrates a different way of responding or doesn’t respond to social interactions and exhibits Restricted, Repetitive, Behaviors (RRBs). Restricted, repetitive behaviors (RRBs) are diverse in appearance and intensity. RRBs may include body movements, repetitive actions with objects, perseverative thoughts, rituals, and/or restricted interests.

Insistence on sameness is one of these RRBs. Need for sameness is actually a typical part of early development. Most likely to occur during transition, such as bedtime or mealtime. Need for Routine is often accompanied by typical fears/anxieties, including fear of the dark or separation anxiety. It is believed that the need for sameness is an early form of self-regulation, serving to control the environment by limiting unpredictability and reducing fears and anxiety. This eventually fades as more advanced forms of self-regulation develop.

When insistence on sameness continue beyond the developmental period where they are typically beneficial, the need to control environments so that it remains the same can negatively impact later development. This is because it limits a child’s experience with more elaborate complex and flexible patterns. This limits overall development, especially developing healthy coping skills. In the short term, keeping routines the same and repeating actions reduces anxiety, BUT in the long run, these RRB’s can maintain or even increase anxiety.

This DOESN’T mean insisting your child stop their stims, force change, or thrust your child into a different routine. That would be traumatic and definitely would NOT reduce anxiety. The key is to focus on keeping things the same while simultaneously teaching self-regulation skills.
