Autism doesn’t end at 18—and support shouldn’t either. 🧡

Autistic adults deserve safe housing, meaningful opportunities, quality healthcare, and support that grows with them. Aging caregivers deserve help today and reassurance about tomorrow.

No parent should have to face the question, “Who will care for my child when I’m gone?” alone.

Autism Health founder Tracy Slepcevic shares why we must plan before families reach a crisis—and advocate for lifelong care.

💚 Autism & Deep Pressure

Some autistic people find firm hugs, squeezing a cushion, or leaning into soft furniture comforting. Deep pressure may help them feel calmer and more aware of their bodies.

Everyone’s sensory needs are different. Follow their cues and never force pressure. Their body. Their choice.

✨ This holiday season, if Autism Health has made a difference for your family, please consider donating. Your generosity helps us continue supporting, educating, and empowering autistic individuals and their loved ones.

Sometimes an autistic body isn’t asking for less stimulation—it’s asking for the right kind of input. 🤍

Deep pressure provides strong proprioceptive input that can help some autistic people feel calmer, more grounded, and regulated.

That may look like:
🤍 Asking for tight hugs
🤍 Squeezing into small spaces or between cushions
🤍 Wanting heavy blankets or pillows
🤍 Jumping, climbing, pushing, or crashing
🤍 Leaning or pressing their body against people or objects

These behaviors aren’t necessarily something we need to stop. Sometimes they’re the body communicating: “I need more input to feel regulated.”

When we understand the sensory need behind the behavior, we can help provide safe ways to meet it. 🌿

Every autistic person is different—follow their cues and preferences.

🧬 What is a Biomedical Approach?

A biomedical approach looks at what may be happening inside the body and how it could affect overall health, comfort, and daily functioning.

It may look at things like:
🌿 Gut & digestion
🧠 Brain & nervous system
💤 Sleep
🥦 Nutrient status & metabolism
🛡️ Immune function & inflammation
🌎 Environmental exposures

The goal is to support the whole person, not simply focus on behaviors.

Biomedical is a broad term—not one specific treatment. Evidence and safety matter, and approaches should be individualized and discussed with qualified healthcare professionals.

💚 Every child. Every body. Every story is unique.

What if light could support the brain? 🧠✨

Red and near-infrared light therapy is being studied for its potential to support cellular energy, blood flow, inflammation, brain connectivity, cognition, and sleep.

The research is promising—but still emerging. 💛

✨ More research. More possibilities. More hope.

Nutrition isn’t the answer to everything—but it is an important part of the whole-child picture.

Nutrients like zinc, magnesium, iron, vitamins A & D, and essential fatty acids have important jobs throughout the body, including supporting brain development, normal nervous-system function, immunity, energy, growth, and overall health.

For example, true zinc deficiency can affect appetite, taste and smell and immune function, while iron deficiency can contribute to fatigue and problems with concentration and learning.

So when we’re seeing things like:

✨ Extremely selective eating
✨ Low energy or fatigue
✨ Difficulty concentrating
✨ Frequent illness
✨ Skin concerns
✨ Sleep struggles
✨ Emotional dysregulation

…it can be worth looking at the whole child, rather than assuming everything we’re seeing is simply behavioral.

And this distinction is important:

A nutrient deficiency does not mean it caused autism, ADHD, dyslexia, sensory differences, or another diagnosis. Research around nutrients and neurodevelopment is much more complicated than that.

Support the whole child. Ask questions. Look deeper.

Dysregulation can have many contributing factors, including:

• Sensory overload
• Changes in routine or unexpected transitions
• Communication difficulties
• Anxiety or fear
• Hunger, fatigue, pain or illness
• Lack of sleep
• High demands or environmental pressure

💚 Instead of only asking, “How do we stop this behavior?” we can also ask:

What happened before this?
What might they be experiencing?
Is something hurting?
Is the environment overwhelming?
Do they need less input, fewer demands, movement, space, predictability, or another way to communicate?

And remember: a sudden or significant change in someone’s usual behavior deserves attention. Don’t automatically assume it’s “just autism.” There may be something else they are trying to tell us.

💚 Observe. Get curious. Support. Connect.

Because understanding what’s underneath the behavior can change the way we respond.
