Ava Wustner is a freshman at Oak Grove High School in North Carolina. The 5-foot-5 libero and defensive specialist also plays for Next Level Volleyball Academy 15-1 (Gold). She outlined her journey in this Digging Dish.
“I started playing because of my older cousin,” she said. “She had played club and was a big influence on me. It had also looked fun and very fast-paced, which immediately drew me in! I started playing when I was in sixth grade so I was about 12, and I played my first season of club volleyball in seventh grade.”
She started as a setter and moved to the back row.
“I started playing as a setter,” she said. “I also played as an outside, and I now play as a libero and defensive specialist.”
She wants to play college volleyball.
“I’ve always wanted to play at a collegiate level,” she said. “I love the competitiveness, the fast-paced game, and mostly, I love to play volleyball.”
She works on serve receive and works out to stay in top shape.
“I try to get as many reps as possible, especially serve receive,” she said. “I take private lessons as well as working out on my own time.”
She offered words of wisdom.
“My advice to young players and people starting volleyball would be to always be open minded and have a good attitude, and not to let your sport define you,” she said. “One performance is not who you are as a player or a person. Consistently and discipline are the two most important factors in an athletes’ skill set, but your mindset determines everything.“
