An article on artist residencies and cross border explorations by Shawn Hoo, The Straits Times. Much appreciated when collective work in the region gets shared 🏝️

“artists have a responsibility to raise awareness of the cross-border
consequences of actions that might otherwise be limited with a national frame. It was in researching the palm tree – a species that has increasingly found its way to ski resorts – that she became aware of the need for more cross-border artistic work. “It made me think that borders are not fixed. In Singapore, we are sometimes insular, but all our actions – the way we get water, the way we get sand, even building the Rapid Transit System Link – affect other communities.” - Ubah Rumah artist-in-resident, Veronyka Lau

Something’s going down for the first time in The Long Run, a first for us and maybe the world, and its a big deal.

Two of our members, Louise Cottar CEO of Cottar’s Safaris in Kenya and Andrew Dixon Founder and CEO of Nikoi and Cempedak Islands in Indonesia, will swap continents for a month. One from a tiny island, the other from the vast plains of the Maasai Mara.

In April, they’ll step into each other’s operations, teams, conservation programmes and communities.

This all came about because they built trust, shared ideas, and failures, all within this community. Our Long Run community was how Andrew and Louise actually met.

And over many year of camaraderie and friendship its come down to this moment: a cross-continental CEO exchange that, as far as we know, has never been done in tourism before.

As Andrew put it, “While our environments couldn’t be more different, our core challenges in regenerative tourism are remarkably similar.”

Both properties are among just 12 worldwide recognised as Long Run Global Ecosphere Retreats®️, our highest accreditation for sustainability across conservation, community, culture and commerce.

We’ll be following their journey closely. Watch this space!🌱🪅

As part of his artist-in-residence at @ubahrumah, Gilles Massot led an trip to the historical cemetery of Bintan Bukit Batu where his research there was the basis of the artworks he developed during his residency on @nikoiisland.

More than 20 years ago, during his extensive research to write the book Bintan, Phoenix of the Malay Archipelago, Gilles and Marc Thalmann @ninja.nomad met Pak Atan, the last member of a genealogy of keepers of the cemetery who passed on 2 years ago. It was an emotional reunion for Gilles, Marc and Pak Atan’s family as they recounted their experiences.

This cemetery is located east of Gunung Bintan, the hill standing at the centre of the island to which it gave its name. It is historically significant because it is allegedly the resting place of characters who played important roles in the Sejarah Melayu narrative pertaining to the founding of Singapore by Sang Nila Utama in the 13th century.

Ubah Rumah is an artist-in-residency and research outpost based on Nikoi Island, Indonesia.
