Part 4: the dreaded clinic call at the end had me in bits …

Nothing can quite prepare you for the 1st attempt at egg retrieval.

1 ovary was completely out of action

The other had just 2 follicles

And only 1 of those had an egg in …. My little 0.1%

The absolute joy in finding out I had an egg was more than I could have hoped for but holy macaroni waiting for the call to tell me if it was mature enough to be frozen was agonising!!

And then by some utter miracle … it was!!

So I officially have one tiny little egg in the freezer!

Now I don’t want to not see this was the absolute miracle it is but I have to be realistic. One frozen egg doesn’t have the best odds for being thawed out, made into an embryo and implanted … the success rate of that isn’t cracking (no pun intended) but I’m going to cling to my little 0.1% because you never know what the universe is going to give ya.

Because we are racing against the menopause clock, I’m immediately on to the 2nd round so back on the meds today and in a couple of weeks we will see if any follicles are growing again!

I’ve had so many questions about the process & my plans so I’ll do a reel answering a few of them in a few days but for now, I’m exhausted!

If anyone has any tips for feeling strong through this process please let me know!

And for anyone wanting to explore their options, I am getting this done at @avenues.life after a friend recommended it and they are truly the most exceptionally kind humans. I was in a bit of a state at times thanks to a slither of medical PTSD 💁🏼‍♀️ and I couldn’t have felt more supported & listened to the whole time ❤️

Part 1: the 0.1%

I’m going ahead with egg retrieval…..

7 years ago, I signed a form accepting that the treatment I needed to save my life would cost me my fertility.

Now, we’re going to find out if any of my eggs battened down the hatches & took cover throughout chemo and hopefully pop at least 1 in the freezer!

There are no guarantees and letting myself hope again feels devastatingly dangerous but if I’m honest, I’m more scared of the process. Unpacking a giant box of medication, scheduling injections, blood tests, scans every few days and a procedure each time is leaving me very anxious. I am a tough cookie but I have quite bad medical PTSD and the fears of how my body will cope through the process is overwhelming.

But how can I say no to what feels like a needle in a haystack chance when before, there wasn’t one.

Now, this chance to try is utterly & completely down to you beautiful beans… my village. Every donation, every share, every bit of support & unbelievable generosity has helped me get here. Without your encouragement and kindness, I wouldn’t be here and I will never be able to thank you enough. Taking that first tablet, I felt the weight of what it meant, and how many people had helped make it possible.

For transparency, @avenues.life (the clinic supporting me), has also provided a small reduction in the treatment cost in exchange for me documenting my journey with them and I can assure you, you will be getting a very honest review of this journey but it’s meant I could close the go fund me & start quicker and when time is of the essence, I was so grateful.

I don’t know what will happen or how this will end. But I wanted you to know that we’re starting, and how grateful I am to have you with me. I really hope this is helpful.

The meds have started & my random start scan is next week so from there we will have a clear view on what comes next so I reckon it’s time to buckle in for the ride and see how this goes!

If you’ve been through egg retrieval, what’s one thing you wish someone had told you before you started???
