mountain bike race was on my bingo card for 2026 so when @margaretmcgill asked if I wanted to join her for chequamegon 40, I couldn’t pass it up

p.s. also hopped in my first cyclocross race (didn’t even think to put that on the bingo card)

p.p.s. just a few more squares to check off for a full blackout

Northern California 70.3 Bike

This was the highlight of this race for me. This course was beautiful and hard in some of the best ways possible. Couldn't have asked for a prettier bike day. Sunny and low wind.
It was not my fastest ride ever but was the coolest bike experience I ever had at a 70.3. Redding really showed up and supported. There were spectators at all the intersections and people cheering from their driveways.

I was more emotional than normal and even cried on the bike going past people who were so encouraging to a stranger. I rode this with more gratitude for the ability to show up and get to do this. Even in the harder moments it was such a cool course and I loved it.

The course was net downhill but still challenging and far from "easy"

Would definitely go back for this bike.

Northern California 70.3 swim.

Not wetsuit legal. First time racing sans wetsuit, that aside, this was the hardest 70.3 swim I have ever done. The first 500 went great and it went down hill from there. The chop and current seemed to be working against me. This was the closest I have ever been to not making the cutoff. I am not as swim fit as I could be but also this swim had some major elements of chaos, including not being able to sight the buoys for a portion of the swim due to them being directly in line with the sun(volunteers were telling us to use the sun to sight, which is a challenge in its self).
I also have never been hit and kicked so much during a swim. Maybe the violence was due to it being wetsuit optional and people feeling more panicky in the water? I don't know but that's my theory.
It was fine, I didn't die and as always I was so happy to get out of the water.
Lake was beautiful, got in with @lauramariajohns and @see_casey_go was there cheering when I got out. Those were the highlights.

Would I do it again? Probably.

Sometimes this sport messes with your head.
Had solid weeks of training. Traveling to beautiful places. Swimming biking and running with my friends and then bam. This week has felt so hard.
Mentally a challenge to feel in it.
Could not physically get myself to go swim this morning - which feels like a defeat in all the swim strides I’ve made.
Maybe it’s taper looming - who knows.
So I laced up and tested my race laces for Redding and my new vest for my pacer leg this weekend.
Always trying to find the silver lining and know it’s not always sunshine and amazing workouts.
Trying to not only post the highlight reel.

New sunglasses 100 percent make you look faster.
No guarantees on actually being faster.

Wisconsin can calm down with this sweat box of the outside.
