💡 SLL faculty publication spotlight: Professor Alex Averbuch’s new article in Canadian Slavonic Papers examines the cultural infrastructure of Russia’s occupation of eastern Ukraine.

Conceived while teaching the Slavic Department course “Culture Under Occupation” last year, the article explores how flags, monuments, music, cinema, education, and literature are mobilized to make Russian rule appear ordinary, morally necessary, and inevitable in areas of Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions occupied since 2014.

How to believe when the answer to your prayer is silence?

Step into the quiet space of Alex Averbuch’s @averbuchalex "where are You" from his collection 𝘍𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴 (translated by Oksana Maksymchuk @ok_maksymchuk and Max Rosochinsky)—a moving poem on faith and searching for light in the shadows.

***
where are You
the root of the answer is silent
it does not yet have any being
to discern
the star of Jacob
which illuminates
with an unborn speech
your boundless touch
in the rift of
gestures thoughts
a shadow passes and a cloud floats
and dust like a fleeting dream
and seeps
with prayers—a worn out heart
like a celestial seed, like the dust of the earth
like a well of water
like an embarrassed force
like slashes of fire
in the dark of your presence

Watch Alex Averbuch @averbuchalex read "we are one on one" from his poetry collection 𝘍𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴 (translated with an introduction by Oksana Maksymchuk @ok_maksymchuk and Max Rosochinsky)—a poignant manifesto of wartime days and an honest, furious dialogue with God. Incorporating biblical symbols, the text transforms the "salt of the earth" into a weapon of retribution, and the act of looking back into a deliberate choice never to forget one's losses.

***
we are one on one
you, unbearable god of mine
because of you
the righteous will perish alongside the godless
we are the people come to you in the night
open your doors
my god, and let us go
this city is too close to flee to
how mournful this flight
with drums and congenital disorders
for our name is—woe
our mouths filled with brick dust
shout of the heaviest hours
I must swallow this hunger
for there is no grave we wouldn’t bring along
for there is no pillar of salt that we wouldn’t look back at
we are the salt of this earth
hurled into your eyes

📚 Sending you into the weekend with a thought-provoking read!
In a new essay for Лівий берег, our faculty member Alex Averbuch asks: Who gets to label Ukrainian writers “diasporic”—and from what imagined center? 🌍
Amid war and displacement, Averbuch challenges the familiar divide between “home” and “abroad,” making the case for teaching Ukrainian literature beyond these inherited categories.
Add it to your weekend reading list! ☕📖

From memories of the past and impressions of present life in Ukraine to generational challenges, two vital Ukrainian poetry collections are explored in Todd Larkin Tremble’s latest review for Swamp Pink ( @swamp_pink), "Letters from Donbas: Translating Silence and Fury."

The piece features Iya Kiva’s ( @iyakiva1) 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘓𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 (translated by Amelia Glaser and Yuliya Ilchuk ( @ilchuk_yulia), introduced by Amelia Glaser) alongside Alex Averbuch’s ( @averbuchalex) 𝘍𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴 (translated and introduced by Oksana Maksymchuk ( @ok_maksymchuk) and Max Rosochinsky), which traces the history of eastern Ukraine through the Holocaust, WWII, and the ongoing russo-Ukrainian war.
