You May Need Me

Avi Harding’s practice is rooted in questions of mental health and inherited behaviour, using photography to explore how these shape identity and meaning.

‘You May Need Me’ takes its title from an old “female pills” pamphlet, in which the phrase is presented as something a woman might need in order to be corrected. Marketed from the 18th to early 20th centuries as treatments for “female ailments,” these pills reflect a wider history of women’s bodies and distress being regulated, particularly under diagnoses such as hysteria.

Here, Harding reclaims the phrase as something more intimate: in the end, she was the one who needed her mother. Harding’s relationship with her mother, Ciara, was long uneasy, shaped by conflict and distance. In recent years, however, that tension has eased, revealing shared feelings of isolation and psychological struggle.

Ciara has never openly shared her inner life, and even now, after a lifetime together, Avi is left wondering about the weight of what her mother has carried alone. This work sits with that silence: gritty, overexposed, and built from noise and darkness. It holds the tension
between connection and disconnection, between the suppressed experience of a mother and the curiosity and growing understanding of her daughter.
