That’s a wrap on UHP Summer 2024! 🌟 What an incredible evening celebrating our interns’ hard work at our Commitment to Community event! From presenting their research posters to showcasing their service projects, we’re thrilled by their dedication to supporting the Cincinnati community this summer!

A huge thank you to our UHP directors for making the event possible, our inspiring keynote speaker, and everyone who came out to support us. Shout out to the interns who won awards for their outstanding efforts and to all the health organizations, non-profits, and hospitals who collaborated with us this summer.

We’re so grateful to be part of this journey and can’t wait to see what next year brings!

A warm welcome to Avni Varshneya!!

Avni is working with First Step Home (FSH), a treatment center in Walnut Hills offering trauma-informed care for pregnant and non-pregnant women with substance use disorder. At her site, Avni has been teaching classes in sexual health, mental health, well-being, and harm reduction and assessing the effectiveness of the sessions. In addition to hosting these sessions, Avni has been creating and distributing a survey about xylazine usage and its impact at FSH. She has also been assisting a maternal and pediatric nurse who oversees the facility in caring for the residents.

“I love empowering women to be their best selves, especially in their most vulnerable periods. The goals of FSH to help women recover from addiction and become independent was really awesome and important to me. Also, I used to teach sexual health classes there with Women Leading Healthy Change and am now a co-president of the club, so I wanted to be involved with FSH throughout the summer as well!”

“The biggest thing I have learned is that people recovering from addiction have generational trauma. Their work to recover and become clean is inspiring - it has shown me that people recovering are so motivated to quit, but cycles of oppression and inadequate social support is what holds them back. FSH work has been really inspiring to be a part of.”

Avni has spent her free time this summer traveling to New York to visit friends as well as participating in the Global Health trip with Wuqu’ Kawoq & UCCOM as a part of the global health longitudinal elective.

Thank you Avni for your dedication and passion to helping our community!
