A leaked initial draft majority opinion that shows Roe v. Wade’s overrule in the Supreme Court has set off protests across the nation by those against the potential risks and restriction of limited reproductive rights. In opposition to the ruling, students protested in Lynbrook’s first women’s rights rally, organized by junior Khushi Nigam.

At around 6 p.m. on Friday, May 13, Nigam launched her first Instagram posts to publicize the plan of protest. Students gathered at Rainbow Park on Sunday, May 15 to make more than 20 posters conveying messages such as “Abortion is a human right,” “Bans off our bodies” and “Keep your politics out of my uterus.”

“Oftentimes, as students, especially when we are under 18 and can’t vote yet, our voices are often unheard,” Nigam said to reporters from CBS Bay Area. “Even though we’re doing so much on social media, we’re out there in the public, people don’t take the time to look at us. That’s why I’m doing this, because I want to make sure our voices are heard and people recognize that students have so much power.”

During lunch on Wednesday, May 18, a wave of students marched through campus and Rainbow Park for the protest, garnering more than 100 participants, which included students, staff, parents and community members. Juniors Eleanor Koo and Harita Sunkara, sophomore Aspen Cheung and freshman Avni Agarwal gave speeches about the importance of the accessibility of abortion to the crowd of students. The rally concluded with Nigam holding up a QR code and a bit.ly link, urging student action.

“We had the QR code because we wanted to make sure our local senators knew that students are also fighting for this,” Nigam said. “Links like those that send emails directly to our senators are what really makes a big difference. The bit.ly link is for students in Lynbrook to sign up to join future rallies in places where we have a community. We want to make sure our voices are getting heard there and we’re getting more students to mobilize during this time.”

CBS News Bay Area covered the walkout on their KPIX 5 News channel that evening.
