POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑨𝑾𝑰𝑵𝑫𝑶𝑾 is a series of hand pulled silkscreen-print monotypes on fabric that aim to capture the awe of witnessing many stunning sunsets from my studio window. These works are shared as postcards, expressing the sentiment of “wish you were here”—a longing for others to experience these moments too.

A selection of these pieces will be on view at MPatmos @mpatmos for the next month, with a small reception tomorrow from 3-6 p.m. If you’re in the area, please stop by!

From A W I N D O W is an exhibition of screen print monotypes on fabric by artist Mariana Vidal-Escabi, offering an intimate glimpse into the profound connection between an artist and her studio space.

The series originates from Vidal-Escabi’s studio, A W I N D O W, a cherished space that boasts breathtaking views and spectacular daily sunsets. These natural spectacles, experienced from a place of personal happiness and belonging, serve as the primary subject and emotional catalyst for the work.

The resulting monotypes are impressions of these moments, capturing the feeling of watching the phenomenon and acting as a timestamp of a specific place and time. Presented in the form of a postcard, the works convey a sense of shared experience and longing, echoing the sentiment of “wish you were here”—a desire for others to witness the beauty she encounters daily from her window.

The studio’s name, A W I N D O W, is a deliberate choice, proposing a way of seeing: a perspective, a filter, and a frame. This concept is underscored by the historical understanding of the window as an architectural device—not merely for letting light in, but for focusing observation and concentrating the gaze by reducing the field to a detail. This act of framing, as the studio description notes, “both limited the perspective and created it in the first place,” a duality beautifully explored in this body of work.

【Ｇｒｏｕｐ　Ｐｈｏｔｏｓ】 This series is part of a larger body of work titled “The Parties.” It features rubbings on vellum of the napkins used in “The Parties” series. This work captures the essence of those gatherings and embodies an element of chance composition, much like the snap-shots taken at a party. In this context, the napkins symbolize those who left their traces on them. In formal terms, it is an exercise in scale and color to recreate how people would gather for a group photo.

The HERE, HERE series builds upon the concepts explored in the TIMESTAMP series, delving into
the creation of a greater sense of three-dimensional space on a flat surface through the use of a
grid.
The subtle presence of the grid’s “ghost print” on the background remains, but a new layer of shadows has been introduced between the grid and the ghostprint.

This addition makes the gestures appear to float, simultaneously generating tension as they interact with the grid’s edges. They seem to move not only through space but also through time. The shapes oscillate between the foreground, middle ground, and background.

𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙖𝙜𝙚, 𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙣, 𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙚 further explores what Vidal-Escabi describes as the “language of linen.” In this installation, she meticulously extracts, isolates, and recreates embroidery motifs from the napkins featured in “The Parties” series as hand-pulled, silk-screened printed designs on raw linen. Each motif is cut and backed with buckram, allowing them to float independently on the wall. Presented like puzzle pieces in the process of assembly, this visual metaphor invites the audience to participate in recognizing and reconstructing both the linens themselves and the generational memories they embody. This approach mirrors the initial stage of solving a puzzle, where one starts with the corners, and encourages viewers to mentally reconstruct these familial narratives.

The guiding concept of this work is the idea that “to recognize” is “to know again.” Through these compelling artworks, the artist embarks on a journey to reconnect with her family history, reliving the celebrations and memories those objects have witnessed, and inviting the viewer to partake in this intimate process of rediscovery.

Mariana Vidal-Escabi’s project 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 explores her inherited Colombian and Italian family linens through a forensic examination and reconstruction process. The aim is to uncover generational memories and understand their crucial role in shaping immigrant identity.

At the heart of the exhibition are two key installations: “The Parties” and “Lineage, Linen, Line.”
The titular installation, “The Parties,” focuses on vintage napkins inherited from Vidal-Escabi’s mother and grandmother. Through an intuitive process, the artist heat-presses flock material and clear vinyl (materials commonly used in textile design for fashion) onto these linens, revealing subtle evidence of lives lived. This includes delicate stains, unraveled lace, and intricate embroidery motifs. Arranged in a grid pattern, the installation creates a compelling visual dynamic, allowing viewers to see the collection as a whole and observe the interactions between the pieces, much like guests at a dinner party. This formal arrangement nods to Modernism and Geometric Abstraction in a manner similar to Miriam Shapiro’s work “Connection”, contrasting with the handmade, domestic, and weathered nature of the natural fibers, which in this case, highlights each napkin’s unique story.

Vidal-Escabi reflects, “As I pressed this factory-made, synthetic material onto the natural and worn fibers of the napkins, all the details came to the forefront—unraveled lace, an embroidery motif, a stain—traces of a life lived. Textiles are repositories of our imprints, and I realized I was conducting a forensic investigation into my family’s life. These linens were witnesses to their experiences, present at family gatherings and parties. I was revealing the evidence of these celebrations—my family’s life.”

Haptic Memory brings together the works of artists Ellen Dynebrink, Mariana Vidal-Escabi, and Natalie Baxter. Each engaging in the traditions of textiles, re-configuring by methods of quilting, printing on, repurposing, shaping fabric into form - adding new layers of history, context and conversation.

This exhibition explores how materiality, memory, and identity intersect in their practices. From Dynebrink’s use of textile remnants and transformative processes, to Vidal-Escabi’s participatory works which explore cross-sensory translations, generational memories, and the language of adornment, and Baxter’s bold, soft sculptures that reimagine domestic symbols and gendered labor, each artist reclaims the everyday to challenge cultural narratives and create intimate, critical dialogues through their chosen materials.

This Mother’s Day, instead of posting a photograph, I want to post a portrait of my family: my grandmother, mother, and aunt.
Here’s a piece from my series “The Parties,” which is a forensic examination of my family’s Colombian and Italian linens. By printing clear vinyl and flocking on these linens, I unearth the traces and evidence of a life lived. My family’s life. These textiles were companions and witnesses to their lives. They carry the imprints left by them through the years.
Textiles are powerful depositories of our imprints in this world- our traces of being.
Happy Mother’s Day!
