A little pearl is on her way 🥹🤰🏽🦪🦀💖🫧🌊✨

Last Sunday we celebrated our baby shower in Los Angeles 🌴 with family and friends 👶🏽💖🍼. We’ve been in the middle of a heat wave and of course this water baby brought the rain down HARD for her special day (especially given that the baby shower was ocean themed LOL). She rained down blessings for her Mami and Pai for sure. ☔️🌧️🌂💧

Thank you to everyone attended and showed love, brought gifts, members of our family who cooked food, helped set up and pivoted to our new rainy day schedule. 🙏🏽🫂💖

Special shout out to Avila’s father, Mestre Amen @mestre_amen_santo_ for making a Feijoada 🫘🇧🇷 for 50+ people and our use of their Capoeira School once we had to move the baby shower indoors. Dave @davegrit our amazing photographer 📸 who was flexible with all of the changes day of and captured beautiful moments.

And to my family in the Bronx, Mario @marsmena_ , Michelle, @amourmichelle_ , Jess @jessx.3 , Melicca @mellymmels and Manuel @dm_valerio for organizing a surprise baby shower for me when I was home in August 🥹🇩🇴🗽💖✨

Thank you, Rev. Kathleen Benjamin and the Santa Monica Interfaith Council for seeing me and inviting me to share a few spirited words on the Illusion of Separation and the Practice of Love.

The collective presence of all invoked the Spirit of King's pronouncement of Beloved Community and the Ancestors of Light guarded the doors as we shared space and redecorated a love -filled world.

I give thanks to Ayangalu, the spirit of the drums, for opening the call to speak and weaving a vibrant fabric of attention so we heard with our hearts and saw the unseen with our eyes wide opened.

Grateful to the teachings of my Oluwo and my Babe, @awofasegun and the Adesanya lineage from Ode Remo, Nigeria.

Grateful to friends and chosen family present for support and encouragement.

Grateful for my sister @Sinaa Greene and my sister in love @Librecht and gog-sister Iya Sangoyemi aka Cynthia Guedea, and Iya-Iya Dee and Mother Vida.

Grateful for my Sister and Mentor and Friend, Dr. @Sharon Johnson

Before Ifa, I was a mess on a journey seeking the places that welcomed me and where I belong.

Ifa, and all that our faith encompasses gave me a road lined with the sweetness of sweet potatoes and smoothen by honey, drawing connections to like minds and spirits to fulfill the greater vision of a united, abundant, world, where chaos and disruption makes us strive, but does not create mass casualties.

All my worlds came together on Friday. We bloomed a world of peace, wisdom, & understanding. Before going home, I went to the ocean to make an offering; the sparkles of sun dancing on the water was confirmation that the Mothers were pleased.

Ase, ase, ase.

✨I felt beauty FULLY ✨

This Sunday at the La Vida Es un Festival celebration at @mercadolapaloma…

….I got to swirl and bask in the beauty of my various Ifá / Òrìṣà communities—Iṣeṣe, Candomble, Lucumi—and more in one space together.

…I got to experience being an audience member for and also share stage with some of the elders and teachers who have been formative forces and influences in my [spiritual, artistic, + ] development.

…I got to feel the activation, stimulation, and nourishment of my various intelligences, sensibilities, parts, and bodies—cerebral, somatic, emotional, astral, etc.—that comprise the entirety of my spirit.

…I got to sit with and face some outdated and irrelevant beliefs in order to allow for their alchemy and integration so I can move forward, play in and be [with the] wind, water, ground[ing], and light[ness] with ease-FULLY and joy-FULLY.

…I got to LIVE the dreams I and Eegun have held for years…for lifetimes.

💛💜💛💜💛

I know the conditioned ways the mass consensus—including myself at times—considers and delegates beauty. I’ve accepted and learned to appreciate it. It exists and thus has its purpose and validity.

And I honor my own perspectives of and relationship to beauty cultivated through my walk with Ọ̀ṣun. She helps me ground in and see when and where it exists within and outside of me: at ALL times and in ALL spaces/places, regardless of who is there or chooses to acknowledge it.

Everything + everyone that exists is beautiful.

Period.

The question becomes whether we [Humans] are seeing/being our beauty…allowing our true selves to be seen, felt, heard, smelt, tasted.

I pray we show up for/as the BEAUTY that just IS.

A TRIBUTE TO LÁZARO GALARRAGA
One of the great percussion masters, Galarraga is a native of Havana, Cuba, and a founding member of the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba. A world-renowned teacher, performing artist, choreographer and writer of Afro-Cuban music, culture and folklore. He became the musical director for the Caribbean Crew and for the Percussion Artists Workshop (PAWS) Afro-Cuban Folklore ensemble in Los Angeles. He has received multiple Grammy’s and performed at the 1996 Atlantic City Olympics, The Latin Grammys and at the White House. He is a true treasure in his community and continues to share and create music with his group SitaraSon.
