Almost American by @ron_marz and @mark_castiello

Russian agents attempt to reach America for a better life beyond the expectations and teachings of their homeland, only to be exploited as pawns by two agencies that compete despite supposed cooperation. This account offers insight into the couple’s arrival and the maneuvers played with their lives, nearly stripping away what they were promised. The theme resonates in current discussions of immigration, security, and broken commitments.

Night People by Barry Gifford & Chris Condon

Night People was a book I didn’t fully value when I read it in installments. I found it strange and somewhat confusing, but reading it as a collected edition I still call it weird while offering a much more positive review than my first read. The cast features characters intertwined without necessarily realizing it. There is a Thelma & Louise type, a pair of hunters with savage dogs that are entirely ruthless. A man committed a terrible mistake, yet did he truly do what he believes he did? A young girl possesses powers she seems not to know how to control, or at least acts as if she doesn’t.

Bad Mojo by @psowill @morrisstm

Imagine a car accident with someone who deeply cherishes their vehicle. You attempt to resolve it by covering the damage, yet the offer causes further offense. No Monterey value can repair the situation; instead, it brings a curse that kills you each night and revives you every morning. Poor Bruce is the unfortunate figure in the story. The black-and-white art held my interest throughout. The narrative feels highly intriguing and unsettling. I doubt we will receive an ending, leaving a sense of wanting more, and I see no plans for expansion. Both writer and artist did a great job.

The Devil That Wears My Face by @peposed @art.by.mccormick @justin_birch_letters

I have never experienced this before, but the book made me wonder whether I should keep reading. It was not poor; rather, the imagery was so effective that it unsettled me. I am unsure why, since I have read works with darker illustrations, yet I credit Alex for the striking art. The plot follows a priest who attempts to free a young man from possession but instead surrenders his body to a demonic entity without consent. The pursuit begins to halt this entity from spreading chaos while it appears as a priest.

Angel: Revelations by @adampollinax @writerras

This origin story for Angel (Warren) is compelling. Warren appears as a gifted athlete and a well-liked senior. Back pain emerges as he begins shifting into the figure familiar from X-Men. The narrative is crafted with strong eerie moments and unsettling events at his school. The artwork is striking, and I appreciated every page. This introduction to Adam Pollina makes me a fan.

Kill All Immortals by @zackkaps @fico_ossio @tgcarvalho_ & Kassan Othman’s-Elhadu

I cannot convey how enjoyable this book was. Imagine descending from immortal Gods, where your conflict with your father and brothers centers on wanting a semi-normal life. Frey has worked hard to feel and live normally, yet her last name brings wealth, power, and fear. She chooses to bring her love interest home after an attempted assassination on her partner’s life, but that choice proves poor because his work as a reporter causes the family great discomfort and rejection. What do they fear, and why do they want him gone? It is a highly entertaining read with strong action throughout. The art is phenomenal.

Captain America Vol. 1 by Chip Zdarsky and Valerie Sehiti

Chip made me love Captain America again. Such a great modern retelling of Cap’s origin that still stays true to who Steve Rogers is. Seeing him wake up to a completely different world felt overwhelming in the best way, and the story really captures that.

David Colton was a fantastic addition, showing the real toll war can take on the soldiers who fight for our freedom. I also loved how Cap’s interactions with Doctor Doom and Colton constantly challenged his moral code. A great read that reminded me why Captain America is one of my favorite heroes.

Geiger Deluxe Edition: Vol 2. By @geoffmjohns @paul_pelletier

There’s not much I can express about how much I love this Geiger series. Geoff Johns is doing an incredible job with this character and story. Despite the danger surrounding Geiger, he’s a complete badass. However, there’s a vulnerability about him that’s captured beautifully. At the same time, he demonstrates his lethal nature to protect the vulnerable and those closest to him.
