Meet the 2026-2027 Colorado Ballet Trainees! ✨

These advanced Pre-Professional Division dancers were selected by Artistic Director Gil Boggs for a season of training side by side with @colorado.ballet. They’ll take company class, learn and rehearse repertoire, and perform on the Ellie Caulkins Opera House stage in company productions. 🩰

One year ago, Axel Sobel was an AQF Dance Scholarship recipient heading to his first serious summer intensive.

This fall, he joins the Colorado Ballet Academy as a trainee — on a full scholarship — after reaching the finals of the Youth America Grand Prix in Houston, one of the most prestigious ballet competitions in the world.

His words say it best: "Still in shock that I actually made it to YAGP Finals... I remember studying the masterclass videos when I first got serious... and now look at me — actually in the masterclasses."

That's what a year of serious work looks like.

Congratulations, Axel. This is just the beginning. 🩰

Why would you train 50% of your range when you can train 100%?

A misconception for many dancers that train in Eurocentric forms of dance, which prioritize turnout positions, is that doing “the opposite” is detrimental to aesthetic demands.

When the hip loses movement options, the body still finds a way to accomplish the task. It may come from the knees, feet, or spine instead of the hip itself.

✅ As a dancer, the goal is a hip with enough rotational options to access movement for the demands of dance.

✅ As a human, it’s maintaining the movement options that allow the body to move freely and with confidence.

✨Senior Spotlight: Axel Sobel✨

Since joining MDSB in 2022, Axel has become an integral part of our studio community. Axel has become a familiar face around our studios, often stepping into our beginner and intermediate boys classes as a teacher and mentor. Over the past few years, he has progressed through many performance roles, including Tarantella, Snow Prince, and, for the past two Nutcracker seasons, Prince. We are beyond excited to share that Axel has accepted a trainee position with Colorado Ballet this fall!

Over the past few years, we have had the privilege of watching Axel grow as both a dancer and a leader. His commitment to his training, willingness to support younger students, and positive presence in the studio have made him someone who is admired by both his peers and teachers.

We couldn’t be more excited for him as he takes this next step in his dance journey. We know he has a bright future ahead and can’t wait to cheer him on from Colorado!

POV: YAGP is exhausting, emotional, inspiring… and somehow still one of our favorite family memories. 🤍

Rehearsals, quick food runs, costume craziness, Airbnb laughs, and all the proud parent moments — Houston seriously gave us all the feels. So thankful for this season, our amazing village, and this kid chasing big dreams. ✨🩰
