“At the core of the earth
It’s too hot to breathe
There’s nothing much to eat
And everybody leaves
There’s a place in the forest
Where the animals dance
Carefree and joyous
Like nobody’s watching
And nobody’s watching,

So they laugh and they dance around mahogany trees
Completely unawares they’re gonna end up as meat
And nobody’s watching …” @placeboworld - 🎶Try Better Next Time🎵.

The one interested better be watching, … we the meat that eats, heh HEH!!! … Maybe some peace, satisfaction, or another kind of glory, … yes you can, … at a cost.
Dismay, remorse, “the God desire” … costs companero, COSTS!

Maybe you pose to enjoy the scene but an agent of denying assails you … maybe you focus to keep moving and woe you turn into tunnel vision … eat the ghosts in the tunnel and get a hunger that rings like unkind bells announcing your marauding NEED, …

A busy crow comes to me with cryptic signal, reports about crawlers, “big opportunity if we move in now now” … “the situation is just emerging” says an involved kite, … a less jumpy sentinel favours void. Poof! The cookbook won’t do here, just don’t waste the ingredients or make a nuclear blend your vat won’t contain …

Behold my visual hymn and *cease the day.
Kesho!
Unless the nightmares get real, blink and your children eat you.

Is there another way?👺

Photography from Sudan at @reeperbahn_festival 2025, curated by @ala.kheir, coordinated by @larissadfuhrmann, artists involved @ala.kheir @aya_sinada @_abushama.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a war that has torn millions from their homes, scattering families across borders and into makeshift shelters in search of safety and survival. One of the gravest humanitarian crises of our time unfolds largely unseen, leaving Sudanese voices unheard as their lives are shattered day by day.

This collection of images offers an intimate testimony. Through the lenses of three Sudanese artists, photography becomes both witness and memory. A personal encounter with war and displacement, where loss, resilience, and fragile threads of belonging are held within each frame.

Mosab Abushama documents the profound human and material impact of the war. His photography captures the destruction of neighborhoods, homes, and public spaces, often contrasting “before and after” images to reveal the stark loss of everyday life, while highlighting the quiet resilience of those continuing daily life amid chaos.

Aya Sinada, displaced from Khartoum to her ancestral home in northern Sudan, explores the stillness and healing of the landscape. In a place untouched by engines, warplanes, and artillery, the Nile emerges as a sanctuary of silence, reflection, and survival, where life slows and trauma can be gently absorbed and transformed.

Ala Kheir documents the human impact of displacement, portraying families forced to flee their homes and navigate life amid uncertainty and loss. His work emphasizes both the resilience and vulnerability of those uprooted, capturing the physical and emotional toll of conflict while preserving the dignity and humanity of Sudanese people caught in the midst of war.

🟣 "Her Culture / Her Lens" Photographer: Aya Sinada (Kampala, Uganda)

A multidisciplinary visual artist who explores various media and tools to express her thoughts and feelings. Her current focus is on photography, as she is dedicated to documenting the impact of war on the lives of Sudanese people.

🟣 Photos: Hana Jaafar, the daughter of a Sudanese migrant who moved to Egypt in the year 2000. Her father rarely returned to Sudan, yet his deep emotional connection to the country remained strong and he passed that connection on to Hana and her siblings. Hana says Sudan has always lived in the smallest details of her daily life – in her taste, her language, and in memories she never lived but somehow knows by heart. Still, it wasn’t until the war began that her sense of homeland truly solidified. She once told me: “The homeland was like a person’s back, I leaned on it without seeing it. But the war broke that back and revealed to me a new kind of homeland… bitter, yet impossible to ignore.”

In ancient agricultural societies along the Nile in northern Sudan, methods of storing the year’s produce were prevalent in order to preserve crops, ensuring they remained in good condition and away from pests. Such societies were producer societies rather than consumer ones that mainly relied on agriculture for their livelihood and less so on grazing. Until recently, women in the Mahas region, particularly the island of Dagarta and its surroundings, passed down the method of making “Al-Gusyba” as an essential life skill needed to face the harsh conditions of life in the Northern State. It was considered a fundamental component of the household, made from the same material used to build houses: mud brick. “Al-Gusyba” can be likened to silos or containers for storing food, similar to pottery barrels, but without being exposed to fire - unlike the water jar (known as Zir) which must be fired to hold water without the risk of melting.

What does exile look like? What does it feel like?

For 13 Sudanese photographers, “Postcards from Kampala” became a way to answer these questions-not through words, but through images.

Each frame captured a moment of displacement, resilience, and longing, seen through their own eyes.
In the heart of Kampala, a city that has long been a crossroads for those seeking refuge, their stories found a home.

Through the guidance of @andreluetzen and the support of @jasourabuelgasim and @goetheinstitut_sudan , this workshop and exhibition became more than a project—it became a shared testimony of what it means to exist between places.

To those who have lived in exile, to those who carry home within them.

❤️ Enjoy a short highlight video of our exhibition ❤️

‘Heritage in a moment of living’ is the theme of our first Album of Sudanese photographers. It celebrates classic moments, for example music and dance, which are obviously full of movement, but also notices inner life, everyday activities, and shared experiences as part of the dynamic of living heritage.
