This festival is a product of a week-long dance and performance outreach programme that was designed for the learners of Beautiful Gate South Africa (@beautifulgatesa). The programme aims to use dance as a tool for expression, storytelling, and social awareness amongst young people living in Philippi township. Through movement workshops and collaborative choreography sessions, 25 learner-participants will engage with themes relating to social challenges affecting township life, while also developing confidence, discipline, teamwork, creativity, and performance skills.

There will be three other performances from the three facilitators of the outreach programme—Cebolenkosi Zuma, Ayaybonga Koki and Lusanda Dayimani—who will be performing works that speak about African spirituality, effects of gangsterism and Gender-based Violence in our communities.

The Friday performance will be for the high school learners from schools around Philippi that attend programmes at Beautiful Gate SA. The Saturday programme will be opened up to the adults in and around Philippi.

Day 1 of the outreach programme with the learners from the Beautiful Gate SA organisation. The day was started off with a vibrant class by Ayabonga Koki, a young dancer-choreographer and co-facilitator for this iteration of the programme. Having worked with the children from Beautiful Gate for 2 years now, I thought it would be best if they experienced someone else for a change. Someone is as passionate about dance, as some may want to pursue it.

We then divided the learners into groups of three to work with myself, Ayabonga and another co-facilitator for this programme, Lusanda Dayimani. We engaged in discussions based on our existing work that speak to African spirituality through the lens of African Initiated Churches, questioning how gangsterism became so rife in our community, and the effects of GBV in the townships. From these discussions we will be creating a children’s rendition of our existing works—from the lens of the learners.

Outreach programme and festival is in partnership with @beautifulgatesa, powered by the @nacsouthafrica
