The red spider lily blooms in Japan for only about a week a year, right around the autumn equinox. That's how it got its name — higanbana, "the equinox flower."

So that's what we painted on Wednesday night.

Sumi-e gives you one shot per stroke. No undo, no going back over a line. Watch how quiet the room gets.

Our sumi-e theme changes every month, which means the red spider lily leaves with September. One session left:

🖌 Sumi-E: Japanese Ink Painting — Red Spider Lily
📅 Saturday, September 19 · 1:30 PM
📍 RESOBOX · 91 E 3rd St, East Village
💵 $60 · everything provided · no experience needed
🎨 Taught by @kohfusumie (Kohfu Furukawa)

Make an afternoon of it — Suminagashi (Japanese paper marbling) runs at 12:00 the same day.

We hosted a Sumi-e (Japanese ink painting) workshop with Ayakoh Furukawa-Leonart Sensei at a quantitative trading firm in Manhattan.
About 60 participants joined us to paint the zodiac horse, and the class ended with great energy and excitement.
This month is also filled with many Sumi-e and Suminagashi (traditional ink marbling) workshops, so my hands are constantly covered in ink these days.

CALL FOR ART SUBMISSIONS!
An upcoming MoM Art Auction is planned for October in Tampa with chairperson and arts gallery owner Odeta Xheka and our entire Executive Board spearheading the event.

The goal is to raise funds for MoM and build on our permanent collection. The submission announcement is live and open for artists to submit through August.

We can wait to share and see your art: Open to Mother Made Art with a passion for the cultural, social, and historical issues and experiences that affect women, inclusive of all reproductive identities.

This call to action to elucidate the art, science, and herstory of women, mothers, and families is at the forefront of the Museum’s mission and vision.

We will have a great big bash and a post auction exhibition. Please spread the word! In collaboration with OXH Gallery.

SUBMIT BY AUGUST 31st!!
