AYDO (@aydo_studio) was founded in 2020 in New York by artists A young Yu and Nicholas Oh. Yu received her MFA from Columbia University and BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Oh received his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and his BA from San Francisco State University. What's your zodiac animal? See the fantastically interpreted version of lunar zodiac signs by the incredible artist duo @aydo_studio in our Mythical Creatures exhibition! Lunar Mythos reimagines the twelve zodiac animals as emissaries of ancestral protection. Comprising thirteen works in total, the series features the twelve zodiac animals (monkey, snake, tiger, dog, rabbit, dragon, ox, ram, rooster, horse, pig, and rat) as chimeric forms encircled around a twelve-headed female Buddha. The series draws from funerary effigies found in burial tombs from the Shilla Dynasty; each sculpture replicates the textures and proportions of these ancient guardians using traditional ceramic methodologies that have been passed down for centuries. The work explores our cultural inheritance as Asian-American artists and becomes an act of reclamation as we also embed contemporary elements such as eroticism and queerness into this pre-colonial iconography. Through labor-intensive and syncretic processes, Lunar Mythos repositions ancestral artifacts as living markers of diasporic identity rather than relics of the past. #aapiartists #mythicalcreatures #contemporaryasianart

International Arrivals speaks with AYDO @aydo_studio the interdisciplinary artist duo of Nicholas Oh @nicholasohstudio and Ayoung Yu @ayoungyustudio (Korea/USA), about their exploration of Korean folklore and pre-colonial spiritual practices through ceramics, performance, and video. They reflect on their diasporic experiences, cultural identity, Oh’s connection to breakdancing, and the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that divides North and South Korea. The DMZ features prominently in their project “Border Ecologies,”created for Open Call: Portals at The Shed in New York City in 2025, which includes life-size ceramic zodiac figures and video. Last week, @jamescoart_ launched the inaugural spring series of CSAA — Curated Support for Art & Acquisitions — my debut program as Community Engagement Lead with a woman-led art advisory that has spent more than 20 years building meaningful collections. The program is designed to help people engage more confidently with contemporary art through shared experiences across New York’s art ecosystem — artist studios, galleries, collections, fairs, and conversations with the people shaping culture in real time. It is a direct response to the questions and curiosities I have fielded over the years on art and accessibility as well as a merging of my experience in education and the arts. Over the past week, Katie and I have moved through a few corners of the art world together: an intimate evening at The Beekman and its collection curated by James Company, artist studios at EFA, the historic Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, and Conductor Art Fair, which centered galleries and artists from the Global Majority. One of the best parts for me has been watching folks engage with the work and asking questions of artists. Contemporary art can feel intimidating until you realize it’s just people (and some of my favorite people!) — artists, curators, gallerists, collectors — all in conversation with one another. Hard to believe we are already halfway through the spring series! Next up: New York Art Week. On May 16, we’ll be visiting NADA and Chelsea galleries, followed by our final studio visits at Silver Art Projects on May 20. If you’ve been curious about joining us, it’s not too late!
