POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

MrJim wrote this poem when a pet died a few years ago. Of course, it was a domestic cat or dog probably, but it fits with the vibe around any animal on an Adventure Walk. We want to hold them and love them. So we can’t always hold them but what a great experience to hold even the tiniest of animals. Once a kid was tracking an apparently wounded bird and caught it (no easy feat). We asked the kid to please let the bird have some room on the ground and the bird seemed to get better by the moment and eventually flew away. A birding friend suggested letting the kid hold it some next time. They continued, “can you imagine the empathy that kid would store up from holding/helping a wounded bird”. Upon reflection, and I knew this kid pretty well, the kid was always super gentle with animals that he had caught. He was known as the animal catcher of the group. I called him the “animal whisperer”. @richlouv liked a picture 😃that the kid was in holding a turtle. It can still be situational but I’ll think more holistically next time.

Day two of HollyDaze2024 was as magic as it was cold. And it was barking cold. But these intrepid folks kept moving…er…unless they saw ice! Then they were just exactly where they needed to be. And even though we said we would stay away from water, we had to do our Adventure Walker calculating, which is a risk benefit analysis that we learned from Playworkers in England. Cuz the benefits are huge. See our story for a tiny glimpse from today. And we’ll keep enjoying this crazy, wonderful, mysterious time of year. #hollydaze2024
