POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

What a wonderful musical day Friday, October 23 was. Started out with an interview with my good friend and brother Steve Turre at @kcsmjazz91 on Chris Cortez‘s show, Mid-day Jazz. From there, we headed down to the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music to the rehearsal for the gala. The Black Girls Play flute and saxophone classes were also in session. I got so much joy watching the students observing the rehearsal. Watch and you’ll see what I mean. And if you wanna see the full performance, there are still a few tickets left for the OPC 20th Anniversary Gala. Go to OPCmusic.org.

An ensemble teaches you to listen with your whole self.

At OPC, drummer @ayindewebb grew through the Frederick Douglass Youth Ensemble and mentorship from Dr. Wellman, Jaz Sawyer, and other Oakland musicians.

He also attended @osaschool. In 2012, he received the prestigious Jimmy Lyons Scholarship—a full-tuition award to @berkleecollege given to just one student living on the West Coast.

His path later included serving as percussionist for @classicstage’s 2023 Off-Broadway production of *black odyssey*. Today, Ayinde is based in Chicago, Illinois, where he remains active on the city’s music scene with while continuing to record and tour.

On October 24, Ayinde joins Steve Turre, Amina Scott, and Jasim Perales for OPC’s 20th Anniversary Gala, bringing this community of musicians together again.

Gala tickets are available in our bio.

From the OPC archives: The Frederick Douglass Youth Ensemble rehearses with bassist and composer @marcusshelby, who mentored young musicians in the OPC community.

Moments like this reflect an essential part of music education: young artists learning alongside experienced musicians who challenge them, encourage them, and create space for their voices to develop.

As OPC celebrates 20 years, we’re honoring the artists, educators, mentors, and students who have built this community across generations.

We have a show this Friday. On the lunar eclipse because we’re just kind of witchy like that. If you come to our show the lunar gods will bestow upon you 30 years of good fortune. After that.. you’re on your own.

8/28 @lepianochicago the coolest spot for hip new original music but only this Friday—the hipness is definitely kind of limited. So skip, don’t walk to Le Piano. Music starts at 9:45pm.
