✨Lighting a Path shines on Gabriola Island!✨

The City of Nanaimo’s Lighting a Path art projections are available to see on Gabriola Island as part of a special celebration! 🌟

This weekend marks the 30th anniversary of the Gabriola Thanksgiving Studio Tour, and to help celebrate this milestone, the Gabriola Arts Council @gabartscouncil and Gabriola Museum are hosting a special display of Lighting a Path art projections!

Originally showcased in partnership with Snuneymuxw First Nation at Swy-A-Lana earlier this year, these illuminated artworks celebrate the creativity, culture and stories of Snuneymuxw artists, highlighting their deep connections to the land and community.

🎨 If you’re exploring Gabriola this weekend, be sure to stop by the Gabriola Museum to experience these captivating works and join in celebrating 30 years of the Studio Tour!

In partnership with Snuneymuxw First Nation, we are excited to share a new way to experience and learn from Snuneymuxw art throughout the city.

SNUNEYMUXW ‘imush tu hulitum (Walk of Life) is a free, self-guided virtual public art tour featuring works by Snuneymuxw artists located throughout the City of Nanaimo.

Founded by sisters Aunalee and Sophia Good, Ay Lelum creates culturally respectful clothing and music guided by hul’q’umi’num’ Law and protocols. Their designs share Traditional Coast Salish style and language with the world, using sustainable materials and ethical practices.

It was an honour to attend Vancouver Fashion Week, the second-largest fashion week in North America after New York Fashion Week and an international launchpad, bringing together acclaimed global designers and emerging homegrown talent 💫

Admiring the breathtaking collections, rich culture, and international artistry this season, I especially captivated by the stunning work of Richard Wei and Ay Lelum.

No one I’d rather take in the stunning collections with than @arieljcao Miss Grand New York 2024, bringing some Grand energy to my beloved hometown.

Prayers for Amshen, and for Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and their family, on the loss of our matriarch Amshen Joan Phillip. Deepest condolences, and many thanks for the gift of Amshen’s life, lessons and friendship.

Amshen was the granddaughter of Tsleil-Waututh Chief Dan George, and the second First Nations woman elected to the B.C. legislature. Her early service in the DTES, her solidarity with Indigenous, social and environmental justice, all this informed her representation and activism.
As matriarch in our BCNDP caucus, she brought wisdom, laughter, compassion and history (and beading) to the work we did. As our government lead on the community impact sector, she lifted up not-for-profit groups and kept her eye on the long game.
And Joan’s partnership with Stewart was a love for the ages. I cannot imagine them apart. We wrap our arms around Amshen’s family and give thanks for her life.

We will never stop learning from her. And I miss her. It’s a great loss for our province.
