earlier this year I committed to pushing my creative boundaries by putting together shoots that were different to my usual style. I stepped away from my go-to whites and soft neutrals, and went for a contrasted concept with a black backdrop — and I’m obsessed with these images!

“Motherhood is an earthquake” 🌱

When I first noticed this black line over my belly it reminded me of all the sisters before me who embarked on this beautiful journey of becoming new mothers. At first, I was ecstatic to have noticed this line. However, over the weeks, this line spoke to me differently. Many feelings and emotions lingered around. But, I couldn’t find the words to articulate them. Now at the last stretch of pregnancy, I feel like those emotions and thoughts are crystallizing into clarity.

Of course, like every pregnant woman I googled to seek my answers. And what came up “Linea Nigra” didn’t resonate with me. Of course, the scientific finding of increasing melatonin, especially in colored people felt more obvious than truth. But the real resonance hit me to the core with the choice of words from my mother. she called it shevni - which means a stitched line. I felt an instant connection to the women’s collective and the wisdom they have carried over lineages.

To me, this was the alchemizing moment of feminine wisdom. A thread that stitches the dividing world that will fundamentally change the identity of women after birth. The cracks of this identity earthquake began when the seeds were planted. Changing relationships with our husbands, friends, family members, work, and most importantly ourselves. The one relationship that meant a lot to me “Me with myself” will take immense transformation from the seed to birth, and coming years after that.

I see beauty, resilience, and much joy in every stitch that will continue to weave the changing world into harmonizing my new found identity. I feel deep gratitude for every passing emotion, thought, doubt, and fear. But allow them to sink deep into the presence of breath and rise above it all.

Finding solace in every stitch as it darkens on every passing day. I am here to dance to this alchemizing feminine mystery and her ways 🧚🏾‍♀️🕊️🪄🧵
