Long before there were mayoral debates, endorsements, consultants, polling memos, and campaign signs, she was showing up in Southwest fighting alongside residents for something as simple as making sure young people had a safe place to play, learn, and grow.

When others passed over our community, SHE SHOWED UP

When the cameras weren’t there, SHE SHOWED UP

When there was no political upside, SHE SHOWED UP

That’s why this victory feels different.

For so many DC residents, this election wasn’t about personalities. It was about whether everyday people still have a voice in a city increasingly shaped by power, money, and proximity to influence. Janeese has always reminded us that government belongs to the people first.

I’ve always respected that she measures success less by who’s in the room and more by who’s being helped.

Today feels like a turning point. A reminder that organizing still matters. That neighbors still matter. That #peoplepowered movements can still win.

Congratulations to Mayor-Elect Janeese Lewis George and to everyone who stepped up to run, organize, volunteer, and participate in this election. Democracy works best when people engage.

And shout out to so many friends and leaders who put themselves on the ballot and into the arena. Congratulations to Oye Owolewa, Robert White, Elissa Silverman, Charles Allen, Gloria Nauden, Greg “Action” Jackson, Dwight Davis, Vincent Orange, and so many others who dedicated themselves to serving this city through this election season.

One thing this cycle proved: public financing is changing what’s possible in DC. More everyday people can run. More voices can be heard. More communities can see themselves reflected in leadership.

The work continues, but I wake up this morning hopeful.

DC chose people over politics.

And that’s a beautiful thing ✊🏾💜
