On Sunday, May 18th I graduated into one of the most important chapters of my life. Years ago, spirit called me to the pulpit of my church during a call for anyone who needed prayer. I knelt at the foot of that stage with my father’s hand on my shoulder and sobbed. I’d spent years feeling empty, unfulfilled, lost, frustrated with myself, and terrified I’d spend the rest of my life grappling with the weight of unrealized potential and regret. Last summer at 3am I stood in @kdotwoods ‘s living room as he, @blackdanielwhite , @yaiken_ , and @clit.hero lovingly bullied me into taking a chance on myself and joining the @icp_creative_practices program. It was the best decision I have ever made. I knew this moment would break me open, I knew it would change me, but nothing could have prepared me for this year. What it has done for my art. For my spirit. I don’t have all the words I only have tears of gratitude for all the ways that I have grown, all the people that helped get me here, and all the incredible artists I’ve gone through this life changing experience with. Thank you to my parents @straightupbk and @nickyjay214 for trusting me to make this decision for myself and for your unrelenting support, understanding, willingness to help with all my unorthodox ideas for photos 😂 Thank you to my grandmother @mpgonsalves for all your help in bringing these ideas to life and graciously accepting frantic texts for everything from fabric backdrops to building literal structures. Thank you to @blkboyshine for being your amazing talented self and giving me the space to ask any and all questions I had about black art and showing me what commitment to craft truly looks like. Thank you to all the black alumni from ICP who showed me who and what I can be and whose ranks I am honored to join. (@adrielmichelle @ethereallynnn @juicydench @sustopramen_ @rickyday @bx.lexx and anyone else I’m forgetting!) And thank you to my grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Jones. The first photographer I ever knew. She didn’t live to see this love grow in me, but she reached across time and space to help me make a photograph that is hanging on a real museum wall. What a blessing.

i’m getting over a cold and my phone is almost out of storage but other than that things are looking up. i have immense gratitude for what i’ve been given , and i’m trying every day to be better than before. one day i will level up to my maximum potential. for now i will enjoy being held and i will smother myself in love, but i won’t drown
