The Winans - A Friend ft. Aaron Hall (1990)

Chart Performance & R&B SuccessMainstream Crossover: The song successfully bridged the gap between gospel and secular urban audiences, heavily impacting mainstream radio.

Billboard Peak: "A Friend" became a significant hit, peaking at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart (with some historical chart references tracking its peak as high as No. 7 within regional or subset urban airplay metrics).

Star-Studded Production: The track was produced by New Jack Swing architect @teddyriley1 alongside Bernard Belle and The Winans, capturing the distinct, driving pulse of the era's urban sound.

Vocal Dynamic: Aaron Hall, the commanding lead vocalist of the group Guy, delivered a famously gritty, soulful guest cameo that traded powerful vocal runs with the Winans brothers.

Music Video and Media Rotation Heavy Cable Rotation: The official music video for "A Friend" was placed in heavy rotation from 1990 to 1991 on Black Entertainment Television (BET).

Video Soul Staple: It became a signature favorite on BET’s flagship evening show, Video Soul, anchored by Donnie Simpson, which helped solidify its massive footprint in secular R&B music culture.

Did somebody say it was national radio day? National radio day! Let me take you back to the 90s — it was lit! From OutKast to Comedians like Tommy Davidson and legends like Luther Campbell. If you came to Miami, you came to 99 Jamz first. My Radio career started in 1988 at WNAA 90.1 FM @ncat_wnaa in Greensboro North Carolina where I did the news with Lute William. I went on to do the news at 99 Jamz WEDR @99jamzmiami ( we competed with Hot 105 and now they are Sister stations — go figure ) and then moved into being a DJ at WRBD in Fort Lauderdale WFKZ in the keys and 97.1 in Atlanta, Georgia. I still remember the music conferences - Jack the Rapper and @peterthomasrhoa’s How can I be Down?. It was when Radio still broke artist and they understood what that meant. That was my start in this world of entertainment, and I would not change anything. #radio #nationalradioday #wedr #wnaa @outkast @unclelukereal1 @themorrisday @jalil.whodini @lisalisall77 @newedition @marc_gay @teddyriley1 @masterp
