common misconception that yin yoga is just stretching the muscles for a period of time. while this is no small task, far more than a stretch is taking place. in yin, we are not actually stretching the muscles. we are putting stress on the tissues. stress is tension placed upon tissues, like your ligaments, tendons, fascia. stretching is elongation that results from that stress. we are stressing, not stretching our ligaments and joints in yin. and as my dear friend @myhumanpotentialtv often tells me: your body was designed to withstand pressure. this only covers a fraction of the potential physicality of a yin practice. your joints are spaces between the bones where movement is possible. with yin: ligaments, tendons and muscles stabilize the joints. with yang: your ligaments, tendons and muscles bind the bones together. one of the muscle’s many jobs is to protect the joint. if there is too much stress on the joint, the muscles will tear first, then the ligaments, and finally the joint could become damaged. in yin, we use support of props and posture to apply a healthy stress or pressure to the body. yin is designed to exercise the ligaments and to regain space and strength to the joints. come discover more about this sacred medicine this weekend with @aztecwarriorprincess and I at @valkyrieyogasd (link in bio) or every Monday Eve at 8:30 at Valkyrie 👁 #yin

it’s a lot more than holding asana. than practicing posture. like yoga itself is. an entire science. philosophy on how to be- or not. a field of study glittered with wisdom and experience. dating back centuries to ancient times where these shapes held bodies to help them build resiliency. resistance. remembrance. and we are privileged enough to remember them: the ancient yogis, the pioneers of traditional Chinese medicine. humbled enough to know Yin exists. and passionate enough to pass it on and continue contributing to its research. immersion begins December 5th. reach out to myself or @aztecwarriorprincess for details 🧚‍♂️
