RoundCat Rally 2026 Day 4: Nagano City

Our route on Day 4 took us from Hakuba into Nagano City by way of Route 401.

After lunch and a pilgrimage to @yawataya.isogoro we headed back to Hakuba on Route 36, around the north side of Mt Iizuna.

Day 4’s roads ranged from incredibly narrow mountain roads to fast, sweeping, touge.

Scenic highlights include rice terraces, expansive vistas, and plenty of traditional timber-frame buildings.

RoundCat Rally 2026: Day 4.

Midship Amusement on the forest roads around Hakuba Nagano.

Another perfect autumn day for blasting around in kei cars. The Japanese Alps were showing a stunning foliage gradient from green at the valley floor to brown at altitude.

@pizza_turismo Honda Beat is perhaps the most versatile car on the rally. It’s a proper midship sports car with enough ground clearance to handle rough surfaces of Japan’s forgotten 林道.

RoundCat Rally 2026 Day 2: Hakusan to Hakuba

We started the day with a very narrow forest road, stopped in Takayama for lunch, and then drove up to Hakuba in golden hour light.

Highlights include sliding around on wet leaves, archery, and more monkeys.

Takayama is a fantastic walkable town with a blend of well-preserved Edo and Meiji period wooden shophouses and newer Showa era structures. When we first visited on the 2023 RoundCat Rally Takayama was a sleepy town without many inbound tourists. This year it was bustling with activity. Lots of new coffee shops and economic activity.

Just a few minutes outside the town center activity drops off and the forest continues to consume abandoned bubble-era holiday homes. The roads were traffic-free despite being foliage season.

Kei cars remain the best choice for 林道.

RoundCat Rally 2026 Day 1: Rally decals, forest roads, and monkeys.

This year we started on Japan’s western coast. We are making our way back to Tokyo over the course of a week.

Day 1’s route started in Ishikawa Prefecture and took us across the Hakusan Shirakawago White Road into Gifu Prefecture on a series of very narrow mountain roads.

At sea level, trees are still green but up in the mountains the leaves are in full fall color. Crossing the Hakusan National Park was breathtaking with golden light and moody clouds around the mountain peaks.

Introducing our Colour of the Month: Rubystar.
This October, we honour Breast Cancer Awareness Month in pink with one of the most iconic Porsche colours.

First introduced in the early 1990s, Rubystar is inspired by the gemstone of the same name. A striking and deeply saturated shade of pink, it symbolises vitality and self-confidence, reflecting the strength of women at the heart of Pink October.

Stay tuned for our next Colour of the Month.
