Blake Miller: The Quiet Rookie Making Loud Noise in Detroit

From the moment he stepped onto the Lions’ practice field, Blake Miller has been exactly what Detroit hoped for: a fast-learning, mistake-averse mammoth who rarely needs his name called.

Standing 6-foot-7 and 317 pounds, the Strongsville, Ohio native a former state champ wrestler and Clemson back-squat record holder (620 lbs) has translated his physical dominance into NFL-ready consistency at right tackle.

Jared Goff has been vocal about Miller’s growth, noting throughout camp and again this week that the rookie “rarely makes the same mistake twice.” His feet, hands, and mind move quickly and his errors keep shrinking.

In two NFL games so far, Miller’s name has barely been mentioned and that’s the highest praise an offensive lineman can get. He’s protecting the pocket, moving defenders off the ball, and doing his job without drawing flags or attention.

The Lions were high on Miller from the start, taking him 17th overall ahead of other top tackles including Georgia’s Monroe Freeling, whom Detroit also loved but passed on.
Now, as Detroit heads to Charlotte to face the Panthers, all eyes will be on the head-to-head showdown: Miller vs. Freeling, pick 17 vs. pick 19, experience vs. upside.

Early returns favor Detroit’s choice, Miller’s PFF grade (73.2) sits third among first-round O-linemen, while Freeling (62.2) is still finding his footing after surrendering 14 pressures in three games.

Goff’s encouragement says it all: Miller’s making fewer mistakes every day, settling in, and playing like a starter not just a rookie. When the Lions and Panthers collide, we’ll see who the better pick really was. But so far, Blake Miller is making Detroit look very, very smart.
