I graduated !! 🎓

This was actually my third time attending a UAL graduation ceremony, including my time as a governor in 2024 and as my bf’s guest in 2025, but this time felt even more special.

My highlight of the day wasn’t walking across the stage, but seeing my degree show piece displayed on the screen 🥹🥹🥹 I was speechless when I realized my work was chosen to be on screen for both the Chancellor’s and the Student Speaker's speeches.

Thank you to my course peers who I shared so many struggles (and confusion 😇) with, and for spending this special day together. Since I wasn’t originally in this graduating cohort, I had the privilege of connecting with double the peers, which inspired me a lot.

Wishing us all the best of luck on our creative journeys ahead!

Form 12 June - 17 June

Birth Mark is a collection of photographic works from an ongoing series which began in 2024. Combining black-and-white photography with plaster, the work traces street textures in urban China that persist through cycles of coverage and erasure. The colour and material emphasise the grit and roughness found in urban spaces, bringing often unpolished details into focus.

New marks emerge as street adverts and graffiti are erased to maintain a clean urban image. These residual traces remember acts of removal, carrying the imprint of what once lived in the space it occupies. In this work, such marks are brought into relation with the body, where roughness blends with softness, and concealment confronts exposure. Through these fragments and textures, this work considers how gradual shifts in urban surfaces alter the way spaces are perceived and remembered, shaping one’s understanding of self.

Having grown up in post-2000s China, the artist saw rapid changes in the country’s global status, leading to rapid modernisation and gentrification. As urban surfaces continue to be sanitised and standardised, informal textures slowly vanish, signalling the loss of a generation’s urban memory. As a response, the artist turns her body into a site of remembrance, reclaiming fading landscapes and traces that were meant to be forgotten by a new era, while questioning the subtle ways perception itself can be shaped by what is allowed to remain visible.

Taking a look at the work exhibited in 𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘵𝘦 (𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳) 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦?

We approached the question through cloud-based memory systems, sculptural installations that made networking routes tangible and poetic, and interactive video exploring how algorithmic forces are amplified, distorted, and folded back into personal memory.

Thank you to everyone who came to spent time with these works, support the artists who exhibited:

As the academic year ends, we look back to April where students from MA Fine Art: Computational Arts had the opportunity to collaborate with BA Fine Art: Computational Arts for Now Play This - a festival of experimental game design at Somerset House, London.

Together they created four interactive projects that explored folk games through collective worldbuilding and over one weekend invited the general public to play their games.

Zhannet along with 3 other students designed Congruent Haven, a side-scrolling game exploring the tension between dystopian and ethereal ideals in the context of the Anthropocene.
