Svikriti | Open Day

Riverbend, a performance by Samir Das explored the pathos of lived/ shared memories and experiences of partition.

The project is developed and based on a short poem by Jyotirmoy Biswas.
Translated in English, it reads like this:

"These last few days before
Leaving our rented home
Our feet grow heavy
On the stairs.

And we haven't even seen partition".

Our hands-on printmaking workshop began with a simple prompt: What comes to mind when we say "wordless"? From that moment of shared reflection, participants explored the relationship between images, narratives, silence, and storytelling.

Over four intensive days, facilitator Indraagni Ghosh guided participants through the histories of printmaking with a walk through the Birla Academy's Modern and Contemporary galleries, before introducing them to the techniques, materials, and processes of the medium. The workshop culminated in a collaborative Exquisite Corpse, where each participant contributed to a collective, wordless visual narrative—revealing how stories can emerge through images, chance, and shared imagination.

We thank Indraagni Ghosh for leading the workshop with generosity and rigour, and all the participants for their curiosity, enthusiasm, and willingness to experiment. You can see the outcome soon as a temporary display on our 5th floor!

Sharing a few moments from the recently concluded Mentorship Programme at Birla Academy.

Our awardees Samir Das (Drawing) and Muskan Kaur (Sculpture) participated in the programme under the mentorship of Partha Dasgupta, while awardee Indraagni Ghosh worked closely with this year’s Printmaking mentor, Sujoy Mukherjee.

An engaging week of learning, dialogue, experimentation, and artistic exchange.
