Before the English speakers come for me: yes, you can express all of these ideas in English. 😂

The interesting part is that languages don’t always package meaning in the same way.

One language might have a single word for something that another expresses with a phrase, several words, or a bit more context.

Linguists call this lexicalisation: the way a language packages particular meanings and distinctions into its vocabulary.

And this is one of my favourite things about moving between Spanish and English. You start noticing all the little places where the two languages do things differently.

Sometimes there’s a neat equivalent. Sometimes there isn’t. Sometimes you need more context before you can even decide which English word fits best.

Sometimes you need five words where Spanish gave you one and called it a day.

That’s part of what makes translation interesting. You’re not swapping words. You’re figuring out what someone actually means, then finding the way to say it that works in the other language.

And sometimes, I just wish English would hurry up and borrow the good ones.

Which Spanish word would you add to the list?
