Mahalo to everyone who came out last night to help us celebrate the lunch of Hawaii.com. I’ve been crisscrossing the worlds of media and hospitality for almost a decade now and for the first time I’m stepping away from the safety net of restaurants to go all in as a writer and editor — a little scary, but mostly exhilarating. Finally made it over the Pali to @pleasecomeagainhawaii - an #icecream shop in #kailua with an eye for design and a taste for local Hawai`i flavors. My favorite was the Shiso Chip made with a thousand shards of @manoachocolate I also love (summer) Lychee Rose and Pandan Matcha. The shop collabs with several local farms and artisans to create their delights: @kulacountryfarms strawberries, @agnesbakeryhawaii @traditioncoffeeroasters and on and on. Go get it. 👌😋🍨

I’m starting to feel at home here. Yoga room, showers, comfy chairs with a view, what more do you need? Had a nice warm bowl of Seolleongtang (Korean ox bone soup) for lunch. The broth achieves its creamy, white appearance from boiling beef marrow bones, in case you were curious (I was). It’s served with brisket, noodles, scallion, salt and pepper with rice on the side. Sort of bland, but I guess that’s what the kimchee is for. I’ve watched the planes take off, slept in a comfy bed... I prefer the Transit lounge on the right side of Terminal 2 versus the one on the left. And I enjoy both more than the hustle and bustle of the Duty-Free mega mall and food court downstairs, but maybe that’s just because I have a backpack that weighs as much as a St. Bernard strapped to my back. Note to self: 1)It’s hard to find coffee (except in the Transit Lounges!) 2) You can’t bring jerky to South Korea. Something about foot and mouth disease. (There’s a joke in there somewhere). Also, the escalators don’t move until you step on them. Eureka! All in all not a bad place to post up. The sky outside has gone from baby blue to white in the last five hours. There’s almost something desert-like about the tarmac. The low mountains with shrubby bushes in the distance, the cloudless sky, the dryness, the silence. Everything is under a haze, like an IG filter. Also, I just found some Kit Kats @foxeatingsocks gave me in my bag, so I got that going for me. Sigh…Life is good.

I had to check my judgement tonight while I was reading the news about Ige inviting non-essential travelers back to Hawai`i. Although many restaurants may not market themselves to tourists, tourists can end up making up a large chunk of the resis on their books.

I have to hand it to restaurants such as @heiho_house and their neighbor @restaurant_av for completely taking one for the team by holding on to a full staff during the dip. Restaurants lose their ass on food and labor when it’s a slow night. Shit, even often when it’s a busy night.

It really shows your employees how much you care about them when you say, “I can’t afford to have you here right now, but I’m going to keep you on anyway. We are going to get back to being busy soon and we are going to get through this together.”

Props to Heiho House for taking care of their `ohana and, even though I hate the idea, cheers to tourism coming back and putting asses in seats.

P.S. I’m super late getting this post up. This wonderful menu (I think my favorite so far) has come and gone. Luckily for us, Aaron and the gang are jamming a best hits compilation right now, which I will for sure be checking out next month. @babysharksf you should come too. #eatlocal #supportlocal #healthylocavore
