Is it choreo or is it social dancing? (PT 1/2) It’s one of those questions the scene can’t seem to let go of. Oftentimes demos are curated to look like a spectacle. After all, how else are you going to be attractive to the impressionable, fast-paced nature of the algorithm? Light sabers, smoke machines, 360 degree professional videographers, outfits, drama…you name it. Whether we think demos are muddling the essence of the dance and the scene, giving a false sense of performance-specific movements versus a good-natured social dance that incorporates the instructors’ class elements, they’re a big part of how dancers can connect to new and existing audiences. So post a demo that looks too polished, too “wow,” and it gets read as fake. Tricks dressed up for the camera, nothing to do with how the dance actually feels on a real floor. It’s counterproductive towards our social dancing culture. Post one that looks too natural, too social, and it barely moves. No wow moment, no reach. The algorithm doesn’t reward something that looks like a solid dance. It’s counterproductive towards artists that showcase connection without performance. So dancers end up caught between two versions of “not real enough.” (PT 2/2 in the comments)
