Mein Trip mit Dustin, Mac, Timmy und dem gesamten Team von Backcountry BC and Beyond neigt sich nun dem Ende zu. Es war ein unbeschreibliches Erlebnis; ein Lebenstraum, der in Erfüllung gegangen ist. Nach einer kurzen Nacht und einem gemeinsamen Frühstück hieß es für mich zunächst, zurück zum Maincamp zu fahren. Danach habe ich noch einen kurzen Abstecher zum berühmten Watson Lake gemacht, um schlussendlich durch diese atemberaubende Kulisse Richtung Whitehorse zu fahren. In der Zivilisation angekommen, stand erst einmal ein frisch gezapftes Bier an. Danke an alle, die mir diesen Lebenstraum ermöglicht haben, vor allem meiner Familie, meiner Frau, meiner Tochter und meinen Eltern.
Die Worte von Dustin „this will be a Hunt of a Lifetime“ waren wahrlich keine Übertreibung.

Day 12 of 15
My trip with Dustin, Mac, Timmy, and the entire team from Backcountry BC and Beyond is now coming to an end. It was an indescribable experience; a lifelong dream come true. After a short night and breakfast together, the first leg was driving back to the main camp. From there, I made a quick stop at the famous Watson Lake before finally driving through this breathtaking scenery toward Whitehorse. Once back in civilization, the first order of business was a freshly poured draft beer. Thank you to everyone who made this lifelong dream possible, especially my family, my wife, my daughter, and my parents.
Dustin’s words, „this will be a Hunt of a Lifetime,“ were truly no exaggeration.

Nach einer kurzen Nacht hieß es wieder: Pferde satteln. Heute war der große Trail Out angesagt. Die komplette Crew war am Start: Timmy, Mac, JD und Steven haben zusammen angepackt und die Pferde beladen. Das gesamte Fleisch der beiden Elche wurde ordnungsgemäß verteilt.
Nun ging es durch die atemberaubende Landschaft Kanadas: über hart gefrorenen Boden, vorbei an Hochmooren und sogar an dem ein oder anderen Elch. Eine Kulisse, die sich kaum in Worte fassen lässt. Nach harten acht Stunden im Sattel trafen wir schließlich die Crew von Dustin. Sehr professionell wurden die Pferde entladen, die Sättel verpackt, das Fleisch samt Trophäen auf den Pickup geladen und die Pferde sicher in den Trailern verstaut.
Anschließend ging es weiter zu Dustins Basecamp. Dort saßen wir in gemütlicher Runde bei einem kräftigen Waidmannsheil zusammen und ließen die Geschichten der letzten Tage Revue passieren. Einerseits froh, wieder ein Stück Zivilisation zu spüren, war die Wehmut dennoch da, dass sich dieses gewaltige Abenteuer langsam dem Ende neigt.

Day 11 of 15
After another short night, it was time to saddle up again. Today was the big trail out. The full crew was on deck: Timmy, Mac, JD, and Steven all pitched in to pack the string. All the meat from both moose was properly split and loaded.
From there, we pushed through breathtaking Canadian backcountry: across hard-frozen ground, over peat bogs, even passing another moose or two along the way. Words hardly do this landscape justice. After eight hard hours on the trail, we finally met up with Dustin’s crew. Everything ran like clockwork: horses unpacked, saddles stowed, the moose loaded onto the pickup, and the horses safely trailered.
We then headed over to Dustin’s main basecamp. Sitting around the table with a drink and sharing a heartfelt „Waidmannsheil,“ story after story was swapped. While it felt good to step back into a bit of civilization, there was a quiet sadness knowing this incredible adventure is slowly coming to an end.

Die Nacht war kurz, aber gut. Die eisigen Temperaturen sind durch die Gedanken an den erlegten Elch verflogen. Nach kurzer Beratung am Morgen wurde der Entschluss gefasst, zum nächsten Spike Camp weiter zu trailen. Dazu musste zunächst das ganze Elchfleisch, das Equipment, die Decke und vor allem die Trophäe auf die unterschiedlichen Pferde gepackt werden. Nachdem dies einige Stunden verschlungen hatte, ging es für diverse Stunden auf den Trail durch die unberührte, atemberaubende Natur von Kanada. Im nächsten Spike Camp angekommen, erwartete uns die freudige Überraschung, den talentierten Fotografen Steven und seinen Guide JD zu treffen. Steven hatte auch das Glück, kurz zuvor einen Elch erlegt zu haben. Bei Elchfleisch zum Abendessen ließen wir das Erlebte noch einmal Revue passieren, bevor es dann in den Schlafsack ging.

Day 10 of 15
The night was short, but good. The freezing temperatures faded away through the thoughts of the harvested moose. After a brief morning consultation, the decision was made to trail further to the next spike camp. For this, all the moose meat, the equipment, the hide, and above the trophy had to be packed onto the various horses first. After this took several hours, we hit the trail for several hours through the untouched, breathtaking nature of Canada. Arriving at the next spike camp, we were pleasantly surprised to meet the talented photographer Steven and his guide JD. Steven had also been fortunate enough to harvest a moose shortly before. Over moose meat for dinner, we let the experiences pass in review once more before heading into the sleeping bag.

Nicht nur der besonderste Tag dieser Reise, sondern einer der besondersten in meinem Jägerleben.
Morgens schnelles Frühstück, dann ging es hoch auf den Berg im eiskalten Wind. Nach Tagen ohne Anblick ging es plötzlich Schlag auf Schlag: Links ein Two-Pointer über dem See, rechts ein starker Bulle. Bevor wir ihn richtig ansprechen konnten, hieß es: Pack ein, da steht ein noch Stärkerer, der passt.
Schnell noch die eine Meile Luftlinie vom einen Bergkamm zum nächsten Hügel rüber. Angestrichen am Baum, so wie ich es von meinem Großvater gelernt habe. Kurzer Gedanke an ihn. Erster Schuss, der Bulle zeichnet. Zweiter Schuss hinterher, er liegt. Ein reifer, alter Bulle, der die nächsten harschen Yukon-Winter nicht mehr überlebt hätte. Direkt im Feld versorgt und abends am Feuer ein Horrido nach deutscher Tradition auf den Elch angestimmt.
Day 9 of 15
Not only the most special day of this trip, also one of the most special days in my hunting life.
Quick breakfast in the morning, then up the mountain into the freezing wind. After days without seeing a thing, everything happened at once: a two-pointer across the lake on the left, a heavy bull on the right. Before we could even score him properly, the call came: Pack up, there’s an even bigger one.
Fast across the mile-long stretch as the crow flies from one ridge to the next hill. Steadying against a tree, just like my grandfather taught me. A quick thought of him. First shot hits, second shot puts him down. A mature, old bull that wouldn’t have made it through many more harsh Yukon winters. Field-dressed right on the spot, and sounded a traditional German „Horrido“ for the moose around the fire that night.

Erster Tag draußen bei durchwachsenem Wetter und erstem Schnee.
Wenn Guide und Wrangler Kumpels sind und sich super verstehen, passt die Stimmung einfach. Nach stundenlangem Warten gab es am Ende zwar keine Beute, aber immerhin hautnahen Anblick von Grizzlys. Danach ging es zurück in die Hütte.
Day 4/15
First day out in mixed weather and the first snowfall.
Having a guide and wrangler who are great friends and click so well makes a big difference. After hours of waiting, no luck today—just an up-close look at some grizzlies. Then it was back to the cabin.

03/15 Früh morgens ging es los, der Weg von Whitehorse nach Watson Lake lag vor mir. Im Hauptcamp angekommen, gab es nach einer kurzen Begrüßung direkt eine überraschende Nachricht: Ich konnte ohne Umwege vom Basecamp direkt ins nächste weiterfliegen.
So ging es auf eine ziemlich abenteuerliche Reise im Wasserflugzeug tief hinein ins Camp zu meinem Guide Timmy, seinem Wrangler Mac und einer weiteren Jagdgruppe. 03/15
Early morning start: driving the stretch from Whitehorse to Watson Lake. Shortly after arriving at Maincamp and saying a quick hello, I got some surprising news: I could fly straight out to the next basecamp without any delay.

Mountain Goat hunting.
Something that, mistakenly, wasn’t necessarily at the top of my list for a while, but is now and will continue to be.

The places goats call home is humbling, challenging, and flat scary at times. There’s something about being in that kind of country for 10 days, living out of a backpack with the goats, that puts things into perspective.

I learned and grew a lot as a hunter and as a person during this one. Can’t wait to do it again someday.
