Another BIPOC Wilderness First Aid cohort in the books! 🥳

We’re celebrating everyone who spent 24 hours learning practical skills to respond to injuries and provide care with limited resources in the outdoors. We’re so excited to see more BIPOC outdoor professionals, enthusiasts, and recreationists equipped to care for themselves and their communities.

Big congratulations to this year’s participants, and a huge thank you to our partners @backcountrypulse and @washingtontrails for making this training possible! ❤️

hi cuties! we’ve received over 50 applications so far for 16 WFR spots—with our small staff team and limited capacity, we’re going to need to close applications early, on sept. 16th. if you haven’t applied yet, get your app in before the 16th to be considered!

all these applications and applicants’ thoughtful responses to app questions make it clear that more courses like this are absolutely needed—queer and BIPOC folks deserve trainings where we’re centered, not harmed. shoutout to @faultline.ensemble for running a queer WFR in vermont this month, @wildmed & @theventureoutproject for their October queer WFA, and @backcountrypulse for all of their wilderness medicine trainings.

tldr: WFR apps now due 9/16. decisions will be sent out in early november

GUESS WHAT, CUTIES!?! Our Queer & BIPOC Wilderness First Responders is coming BACK! And save the date for Queer & BIPOC Wilderness First Aid 😘

WFR applications are now LIVE! Join Kindling and @backcountrypulse in January for a hybrid WFR course. The WFR builds upon the foundational skills taught in Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) and Wilderness First Aid (WFA) courses (although these are not prerequisites), offering a deeper dive into complex wilderness medicine skills and independent decision-making. This course provides evidence-based training in a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive environment that values patient dignity and inclusive care. The WFR is tailored for folks engaged in remote or multi-day outdoor activities where emergency help may be delayed by days or more.

This is a hybrid 80-hour curriculum; students will need to engage in 20-30 hours of pre-course interactive online learning before the 50-hour/6-day in-person program. The in-person portion of the course includes engaging lectures, simulations, and hands-on practice of first responder skills, covering trauma, medical, and environmental care, as well as advanced patient management and evacuation planning. Unique to Backcountry Pulse, every WFR course includes a day-long student-led scenario day conducting full patient assessments and evacuations in remote areas.

There will be an optional add-on Street Medic Bridge Training Day on January 20th. The day will cover consent, ethics, and other direct action/protest-specific knowledge. Participants will also receive hands-on training with pepper spray and tear gas decontamination as well as an opportunity for review of other hands-on skills.

Applications due October 19th. Link to apply is in our bio! This course is the best, and we can’t wait to learn with you!

Registration and info about our Feb WFA course will be available later this fall. See you outside soon, cuties!

Wilderness First Aid is an introductory wilderness medicine course appropriate for people of any experience level who spend time recreating in the outdoors. Taught over a period of three days, the course combines lectures, skill demonstrations, hands-on practices and multiple team-based wilderness medicine scenarios in an outdoor setting.

Participants will learn how to assess an injured or ill patient, how to recognize and administer first aid for common backcountry injuries and illnesses and how to make an appropriate evacuation decision. Certification is provided through Backcountry Pulse and is valid for two years.

Backcountry Pulse x SoulTrak Recap 🌿⛰️

This past weekend, we spent time with SoulTrak alongside 7 other DC-based outdoor and environmental organizations, completing CPR + Wilderness First Aid certifications with Backcountry Pulse.

Huge shoutout to @soultrakoutdoors for bringing this group together and continuing to invest in outdoor leadership, safety, and community care. It meant a lot to be in space with so many folks doing powerful work across the DC region.

It was inspiring to witness how deeply everyone showed up; engaging, asking questions, and shifting their perspectives around wilderness medicine. A big takeaway: these skills aren’t just for the backcountry… they’re tools we carry into our everyday lives and communities.

Huge, huge thank you to @legacyhilltop for hosting both the course and the instructors. Y’all were incredible, truly such gems. And the morning breakfasts did not go unnoticed 💛

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out Backcountry Pulse to learn more about bringing a Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course to your organization or outdoor community.

Grateful for spaces like this that continue to build knowledge, confidence, and collective care.
