End of an era.. 🥹🚐

Two years ago, I bought my Mitsubishi Express from @backpackercars_australia with the plan to slowly convert it myself 🚐🇦🇺

I started with an empty van and wanted to see how far I could take the DIY approach… but eventually I decided to make it properly liveable. That’s when I went with a @luffare.aus kit and it completely transformed the van into a proper camper in under 30 minutes 🤯🏕️

Fast forward two years, countless adventures and a whole lot of memories later… I’m now selling the van back to Backpacker Cars through their buyback guarantee 🔥

If you’re looking to travel Australia in your own setup, BCA have Camper Vans & 4WDs available in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns & Perth, equipped with the camping gear you need to hit the road 🙌🏼

Their vehicles come with:
✅ Roadworthy
✅ Registration
✅ Mechanical checks
✅ Freshly serviced
✅ 6 month warranty
✅ Professionally installed equipment

So if you’re planning the big Australian road trip, check out Backpacker Cars and get on the road with a bit more peace of mind ✌🏼🇦🇺

🇦🇺 A little reminder if you’re building a new life in Australia…

Not every season will look like this.

There will be days when you’re watching an Australian sunset thinking, “I can’t believe I actually did this.” And there will be days when you miss home, feel lost, struggle to find work, or wonder if moving here was the right decision.

Both seasons are temporary. 🤍

So when life feels good — slow down, appreciate it, take the photo, watch the sunset, go to the beach, call it your new home. 🌅

And when life feels hard — remember that this chapter isn’t forever. Keep going. Better days are on the way.

Sometimes the life you dreamed about takes a little time to feel like home. ✨

Your dream deserves a chance. 🫶🏼

Day 5 - Bundaberg to Miriam Vale 📍 - 149km

Kind man from his coffee cart gave me some donuts and I was happy. It’s weird to look back on this moment and essentially ‘re-live’ all the emotions I was feeling in this moment.

At the time, I was only five days in. Everything still felt so new, overwhelming and uncertain. I was still figuring out what this journey was actually going to ask of me, physically and mentally.

But I also remember how much the small things meant. A stranger being kind. A couple of donuts. A few words of encouragement. Little moments that probably meant nothing to the person giving them, but meant everything to me after hours on the bike.

Looking back now, I think that’s one of the biggest things this journey has taught me; never underestimate the impact of a small act of kindness. You genuinely have no idea what someone might be carrying when you cross paths with them.

Day 4 - I took a rest day. Looking back now? I wish I hadn’t. But hindsight is an incredible thing but as a wise person once said, ‘the past is a place of reference, not a place of residence’ and I remember feeling terrified in that moment.

I remember having a lot hope, a lot of spirit but also this overwhelming feeling of dread for the safety of my life. Day 3 was the first day on the Bruce Highway and it broke me. I remember having the car shout abuse at me and worrying that this is how all people will treat me. (They didn’t) but in that moment I needed to rest. I went into the ride blind of the fear I would carry and I needed to reset,

Never begrudge yourself for having a rest, taking a day out or changing the plan. Never regret listening to your body and mind when you need to. Because you can still move forward even if you take that time.

And on this rest day I got to see the most beautiful sunset from the joy of my Van Nessa. Something I appreciated in that moment and it forced me to slow down. @backpackercars_australia

DAY 2 - 19/07/2026
📍 Start: Gympie
📍 Finish: Maryborough
🚲 Distance: 104km

Day 2. And I think this was the day the reality of what I had actually signed myself up for started to hit. I was lucky enough to have my coach Ryan ride the first half of the day with me, but eventually it was time to say goodbye and keep going alone.

And honestly? It scared the crap out of me I won’t lie.

Cycling alone was something I had been afraid of throughout training, and suddenly there was no avoiding it. It was just me, my bike and the road ahead, knowing I had thousands and thousands of kilometres still to go.

I think this was one of the first moments where I thought, holy shit I’m actually doing this. And my mental did get the better of me.

But amongst the nerves, there were some pretty bloody beautiful moments too.

Made a four legged friend on the side of the road 🐴, rode through some incredible scenery, and eventually made it into Maryborough with 104km done.

And then there’s the part of this journey you don’t always see from the bike; life with Mady and our BCA support vehicle.

While I spend my days pedalling, this thing is basically our little home on wheels. Our bedroom, kitchen, storage room, charging station, recovery space and occasionally the place where I sit questioning every life decision that led me to cycling around Australia. 😂

One of my favourite parts has been finishing a day absolutely exhausted and finding Mady cooking dinner wherever we’ve ended up; sometimes with views that make you realise just how lucky we are to experience Australia this way.

Having our kitchen, bed, food, cycling gear and basically our entire lives travelling alongside us has made an enormous difference to this journey. If you’re travelling Australia and looking for your own little home on wheels, you can also use my code SHONEL with BCA. 🚐🤍

Still scared. Still figuring it out. But another day forward. 🚲

A few things that just make this crazy adventure - happy 🤍

Living on the road definitely makes you appreciate the little things a whole lot more, a proper meal from the comfort of my van on the side of the road, somewhere for me to put my feet up, the luxury to stop and rest wherever my day takes me.

Vanessa is my home on wheels. Bedroom, kitchen, office, recover room and everything in between, I’m so grateful and I couldn’t imagine doing this adventure without her 🤍

I think this ride is completely rewiring my brain.

We spend so much of our lives chasing things we’re told will make us happy. More money. A nicer car. A bigger house. More clothes. The next achievement. The next thing that proves we’re doing well.

And I keep thinking ‘why?’ Trust me a lot on this ride all I do is think about these things

Because some of the happiest and most peaceful moments I’ve had on this journey have cost me absolutely nothing.

A sunset in the middle of nowhere. A conversation with a stranger. Sitting outside with Mady after a huge day. Seeing parts of Australia I didn’t even know existed.

And I think there’s a mental health conversation in that.

Because when your brain is constantly focused on what you ‘don’t’ have, where you ‘should’ be, who is ahead of you and what you need to achieve next… it can become really difficult to appreciate the life that is happening right in front of you.

I’m learning that happiness isn’t necessarily waiting for us at the next milestone. Sometimes it’s hidden in the tiny moments we’ve been moving too fast to notice.

This bike is forcing me to slow down enough to see them.

And travelling Australia with BCA has given Mady and me the opportunity to experience places we probably would have driven straight past otherwise.

I don’t think good mental health means being happy all the time. I’ve had some incredibly difficult days out here. But I do think part of looking after our minds is learning to notice the things that make being here feel worthwhile.

Connection. Experiences. People. Nature. Laughter. Purpose.

Maybe being ‘rich’ has a lot less to do with what we own and a lot more to do with how much of our life we actually get to feel.

And if you want to experience more of Australia yourself, BCA have also given me a code for you guys 🤍

Use SHONEL with BCA and you’ll receive a whole year of roadside assistance

Go find your own hidden gems. 🚐🌏
