DAY 48: No Business Knob Shelter (338.3) to Erwin to Curley Maple Gap Shelter (348.8) ~10.5 miles

Left the shelter around 9 & headed the 6 miles into Erwin. We had some short bouts of ascent through more Helene Damange areas before running into a SOBO hiker completing his thru hike that got cut short by the hurricane. He had about 100 miles to go, so we gave him early congratulations & he bid is farewell on our descent into town.

We stopped at Uncle Johnny's hostel for some snacks & attempted laundry, but their dryer was broken. The town provides a raft service for hikers to cross the Nolichucky River since the bridge got wiped out by the hurricane. I was planning on going into town to do laundry & get some food but I wanted to experience going in the raft so Willard, a raft guide, took me across the river & back with his dog, Joe. Mül decided to swim across the river, which apparently wasn't that bad, but I thought was scary.

After the river adventure, Mül & I waited for Tent Poles & Clencher to be done with an interview so we could head into town. Oh Man is a professor of Sociology at the University of Atlanta & was conducting a qualitative study on thru hikers. He offered us a ride into town & back out after we did laundry & had lunch at a pizza place. He dropped us off at the AT entrance at the other side of the river & Mül & I got to do an interview before we said our goodbyes to Oh Man & headed the last 4 miles up trail around 7 pm.

We saw 3 deer, a tiny gardener snake, & a turkey, all in quick succession (about 20 minutes). I had just been saying at the beginning of the 4 miles that I hadn't seen deer, a snake, or any bears. Well, I knocked out 2 of those animals in one go & got the turkey bonus. And, once we got to the shelter in the dark, I nearly stepped on the local shelter copperhead. He hung out at the base of the middle ladder to the top floor for a while, & it was dark. I felt bad for keeping everyone up, so I eventually climbed up the far ladder to get to the top & set up my sleep system. I really dislike getting to shelters so late. It's frustrating feeling like you're being a bother to others. The Copperhead didn't help the situation.
