Scenes from day 3 of 5 of the kiln firing. It’s over 2k degrees inside now! The process is nonstop monitoring, adjusting, and feeding, with round the clock shifts. I’m not doing much kiln stoking, but I am enjoying opportunities for making food to share. Tonight I cleaned up our firepit for our first campfire meal of the season (chicken stew with everything dinner rolls on the side 🙌)

I’m not a believer in karma or fate… and there are no such things as coincidences… however, sometimes things do come together in an odd way.

As I’m reading the third book in the “Agent Pendergast” series, the focus is around New York City. More specifically the bones of 36 victims found in a charnel house, all murdered and mutilated more than a century ago… at a time when “cabinets of curiosities & oddities” predated the museum of natural history. (If you can’t tell, I’m pretty hooked on this series… and looking ahead I see the antagonist is prevalent again in book 21)

At the same time, talking to a friend yesterday about a piece being made for him by @micahredmond which was going to be one thing, but now morphed into an oddity of that shape… got me all excited, and the anticipation to see the final result at the @vegaspipeshow is growing!

So, not coincidentally… I mentioned this “Dublin” by Micah, in the conversation as one of those pieces that lives in my home, but rarely gets the rest it needs.

It’s a Dublin… no doubt. But it’s such an oddity of the shape. It’s non compliance and lack of uniformity creates so much visual texture almost paralleling the tactile, the sandblast provides.

I’m as much a fan of Micah’s work, as I am these sorts of fictional novels & series.

So as fall hits (at least here on the island) officially September 22nd… the nights will come sooner, the air crisper… in turn, the cigars a little less, but balanced by even more pipes smoked. And, more books read. Because quite honestly, although I have 400+ channels… there’s never anything on.

*side note… I feel I’ve finally given this piece the photographic justice it deserves. My previous post on it taken with an iPhone, looking back. The base was too similar in finish, and the lighting (my table lamp) too bright a bulb. I’m now pleased.

My theory on pipes at pipe shows you’ve heard me say, there’s always someone standing behind you… waiting for you to place it back down.

Well, it’s even worse when it’s online… you can’t hold it, nobody knows you’re interested in it. And quite possibly 100’s of others are looking at the same time.

I did this… I looked and oogled a piece only to come back and it was gone. The shape, finish weight, length… chamber size, it checked every box. But even more so, was the odd aesthetic feature of a worn finish… exposing bare wood where more inky black would’ve been.

So I did the next best thing, not right away… ya know it could’ve just been an impulse thing. But it was far more than that. I’d never forgotten that finish!

I reached out to Austin @ajquinlanpipes we talked and joked… and although he works at Peterson… that didn’t affect the fun I had talking with him! Especially with him now being sleep deprived (whatever that is) and knee deep in dirty diapers.

Not only did he make me the same pipe but in my opinion, better than the one I fell for online.

All those years spent illustrating and painting, his musical background his passion for pipe making. His studying to create not just a great looking pipe, but one that smokes so beautifully… can all be felt in this piece. From the warm comfort of the bowls shape in the hand, the shank’s geometry and uber comfortable stem. And the worn aged finish I was aching for.

I rarely, if ever include the pipe sock in any of my posts, but his choice of purple is part of his story. Inspired by Irish Heather and stamped like his pipe not just with his makers mark but “Déanta in Éirinn” (made in Ireland) … We’re gonna have some 10am pints of Guinness on a “Kawfee Talk” soon enough! Room temperature of course.

You may have assumed at first this was a tale of one that got away, and then found again… No, that one’s coming soon. So, stay tuned.

Times a funny thing. We can sit and stare at a clock and watch the day drag, but we also wonder at times, where’d all the time go.

In the blink of an eye, we went from racing motorcycles on the street at 2am, bungee jumping out of a hot air balloon over the Rockies, even surfing in waters known to have sharks trolling for breakfast. To, needing to stretch before attempting to get out of bed

Having more pipes, tobaccos, cigars … AND TIME behind me than I’ve got in front of me, it makes you think… oddly I may not remember an appointment next week without an alarm. But I can recall every story, for every pipe in my collection when I pick them up, and ponder while enjoying them.

The elegance of this @drfrancpipes bulldog, deserved a tobacco just as nuanced and precise in its flavors as this pieces distinctive lines and flow. So, a few coins of escudo with more age than myself.

On the topic of answering questions…
Albert Einstein, once said:

“Do not absorb all advice from elders, idiots age too”

So, explore your tobaccos, enjoy your pipes… there are no, and have never been any rules in this hobby/lifestyle. What works for you… is the best method…
for you.

Best of summer breakfasts— homemade yogurt with fresh peaches and granola. 👌

Making homemade yogurt is so simple in the Instant Pot if you haven’t tried it before. My husband eats so much yogurt, I’m making it almost twice a week many weeks 😅. For the cost of one yogurt container, I can double the yogurt and get a half gallon of whey to use in baking recipes and smoothies.

16 years ago, our oldest was born and @backwoodspiper became a father for the first time. What a ride it’s been since 😆 Jeff, your constant love, presence, and singular investment in your children’s lives is a gift that can’t be quantified or appreciated enough. Happy Father’s Day!

Congratulations, Jeff and Max, for finishing the kiln! (Welding on ladders in 90 degree heat!) Of course we had to bring the kids out to admire the finished product. Hopefully, everyone is as inspired and excited for the next stage of the project— yard work and beautification!

Happy (speed) climbers! We had fun racing up the wall last week. I’ll let you guess who was last and who was first 😉

You may remember this piece by @paulspipes I posted over a year ago… it’s become a “Father’s Day” pipe for me in a way. I knew before it was done, it would’ve been a pipe… shape, size and aesthetic both my father and grandfather would have wanted, and had!

Now, Father’s Day shouldn’t be a time of sadness, but both my grandfather and dad are gone, and I won’t be seeing my daughter this weekend. Instead, it’ll be a great time to just sit, relax and have the pipe they both would’ve appreciated.

And without Julia… it’ll be a peaceful quiet day! lol… and soon enough I’ll have a son-in-law like @mrbream I get to corrupt!

Listen I’ve said this every Father’s Day, and I’ll keep saying it… ANYONE can “father” a child… but to be a “dad” takes time, effort, patience, understanding and above all else, love.

It’s not what you buy them or where you take them. It’s what you teach them! It’s simply being there for them.

Listen to them, guide them, give suggestions not orders… being there, whether under the same roof, near or far, is what matters and means the most. These are the lessons, I learned by actions not words.

So… to all the dads, stepdads, grandads and bonus dads… and if so lucky great-grandads!

@cornellanddiehl 8 State Burley is truly magical this go around. The way the burley and oriental varietals play with one another on the foundation of virginia leaf smokes the way a good fugue sounds to me.

Mornings like this feel so special because they're rare and fleeting. 70 degrees in late May in Texas, new growth all around me in shrubbery, new growth within me and in those around me as well... a respite by the bay on the horizon.

For now all that can be right is, and it is well with my soul.
