🧉 Have you ever tried “mate”? It’s so much more than just a drink! 🇦🇷🇺🇾🇵🇾🇧🇷

Declared the national infusion of Argentina and also enjoyed in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Southern Brazil, mate is a caffeine-rich infused drink that, for me, started as a companion during long university study sessions with friends (though I confess, it didn’t always keep me awake! 😂).

It’s made by steeping dried leaves of the yerba mate plant in hot water and sipped through a metal straw called a “bombilla,” which acts as a filter to keep out the loose leaves.
But mate is more than just its unique flavor; it’s the perfect excuse to gather with friends, enjoy nature in a park, and share endless conversations. And yes, we share the same straw and gourd among everyone! It might seem unusual, but it’s a symbol of friendship and togetherness.

Mate is ingrained in our daily lives, from morning till night. It’s a tradition that’s lived and shared.
So, if you ever visit South America, don’t be surprised if someone offers you mate. Embrace it! It’s a wonderful way to immerse yourself in our culture and connect with locals. 😊

Have you ever tried it? What did you think? 👇

Celebrated my 23rd wedding anniversary with @leland.p.smith by finishing our Portuguese Camino and arriving at the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela (which means St. James of the stars because the Bishop who found St James’ remains in the 800s was led by the stars). We did it… 91 miles! Made amazing friends along the way all over the world, was reminded not to poop in people’s backyards, saw beautiful countryside and coasts in Northern Spain & learned that the Spaniards call King Charles Carlos (& Queen Elizabeth they called Isabel!). We watched the coronation during our lunch stop. I have had the best time with my mom & I am so proud of us! Thank you @leland.p.smith for your love, support, & holding down the home front!
