I worked as a bike messenger in SF from 2007-2014. Around 2012 I found a a part time job at a gym but I wasn’t able to really focus on that as a career until 2015. I remember I would teach a spin class at the SOMA Golds Gym at 6am and then work the streets on my bike until 5pm and then teach another spin class at 6pm before heading back to Oakland on Bart. Sometimes I try and explain this to clients as a demonstration of my growth, but a lot of people don’t get it. I try to explain it to kids, and they can only see that I messed up, but I get that cus they are kids. Most people don’t even have a concept of a what a bike messenger is and some people only know it as the modern day version of an app based food delivery service.

When I started working in 2007, we got our routes sent to us via text on a flip phone and had to use a paper thomas guide to find unfamiliar addresses because there were no smart phones and even after they came out, most bike messengers couldn’t afford them, especially me. We had fun with though. We would sneak onto rooftops and find hidden spots and tunnels through out the financial district. A lot of the messengers would start drinking at 7am and some of them even sold drugs to the business people on their way to the high rises. I was sober and didn’t sell drugs but it was eye opening to see the way we all sort of shared the downtown area. I don’t think that culture exists in 2022 in SF.

The job taught me a lot about time management and being efficient and what it means to really wiggle through situations both literally and figuratively, but it was also extremely dangerous. I got hit by multiple cars, got accosted by people on the street regularly, and no one ever gave me a positive look when they see me and my dirty bike get on their Bart car. I remember when I quit for the last time (yes I had “quit” many times 😂).

I’m glad I quit that industry and pushed so hard to make being a personal trainer work for me. If you’re interested in becoming a personal trainer or just want to level up your life, hit me up. I love seeing people grow.
