🦡 UW-Madison: I’m coming “home” for homecoming and hope to see you at one or both of these talks next week!

One will be more law and first amendment focused — chatting with constitutional law scholar Howard Schweber about the lawsuits I won against UW and the NIH, and the other will be more primate lab-focused, covering my experience working at Harlow Primate Lab and the organization I co-founded, Justify, which is a worker-led nonprofit supporting individuals with firsthand experience in animal research, elevating their voices, and advocating for science without human or animal suffering.

Thanks to all the students hosting me and look out for us doing outreach on campus as well. 📣

🦡 I’ll be giving a second presentation during my week-long return to my alma mater: Inside UW–Madison’s Primate Labs: 2,000 Monkeys and the Cost of Caring

This event is co-hosted by UW’s Animal Advocacy Club and the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund chapter and will be taking place on Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 6 -7 pm at the Law School (975 Bascom Mall, room 2211).

Yes, there will be food! Open to all. Link to register is in my bio / QR code.

📚And there might even be a very special giveaway featuring a couple of author-signed books (John Gluck & @lindsoliver)!!!

UW–Madison alum and former primate caretaker Madeline Krasno shares a rare firsthand look inside the university’s primate research program, where approximately 2,000 monkeys are housed. Through stories of the animals she knew and cared for, she explores a part of animal research that is rarely discussed: what happens when people enter this work because they care, only to find that the job asks them to act against that care—and what they carry with them afterward.

After UW–Madison restricted her on social media for criticizing its animal research program, Krasno successfully challenged the university in a First Amendment lawsuit. She later co-founded Justify to support people with firsthand experience in animal research, help them share their stories, and accelerate the transition toward science without animal or human suffering. Moving beyond simple labels of heroes and villains, this presentation asks audiences to consider the lives hidden inside UW’s laboratories, why speaking openly can be so difficult, and what we can learn from those who have been inside.

🦡 It’s time for my annual return to my alma mater, UW-Madison, and what better time than Homecoming Week!

Up first is a very special event hosted by UW’s Student Animal Legal Defense Fund chapter that will be taking place on Monday, Sept. 28, 5:30 pm, at the Law School (975 Bascom Mall, room 3260).

Yes, there will be food! Open to all. 🙏🏻

A B O U T 🐒

UW–Madison alum and former primate laboratory worker Madeline Krasno will join constitutional law scholar Howard Schweber for a conversation about the First Amendment, viewpoint discrimination, government social media, and the limits of institutional control over public debate.

Krasno’s involvement began when she discovered that UW–Madison was personally restricting her on social media, causing her criticism of the university’s animal research program to disappear from public view; her legal challenge later revealed a broader system of keyword filtering affecting public discussion of animal research more generally.

Krasno also became a plaintiff in a separate First Amendment lawsuit against the National Institutes of Health (NIH) over similar filtering practices.

Drawing on these cases and Krasno’s experience as a former UW lab worker, alumna, advocate, and plaintiff, the discussion will ask when government content moderation becomes viewpoint discrimination, whether public institutions can invite participation while quietly shaping the boundaries of permissible debate, and—against the backdrop of UW–Madison’s commitment to “sifting and winnowing”—whether a public university can truly protect open inquiry while controlling which criticisms the public is allowed to see.
