Africa is not a trend.

It’s a force and @desiree_rsa is one of its most intentional architects.

In this exclusive interview with The Motherland Magazine, the South African DJ and cultural curator speaks on African music, Pan-African unity, and the responsibility of reshaping how the world sees the continent through sound, style, and presence.

From Detty December in Lagos feeling like a celebration of life, to Lagos itself as organised chaos, Desiree reflects on African authenticity, diaspora connection, and why African culture doesn’t need Western validation to thrive.

She also addresses the reality of African women DJs on global stages the misconception, the tokenism, and the urgency for true representation across electronic music, Afro-electronic, and global festival lineups.

Fashion, for Desiree, is never costume. It’s control, comfort, and confidence wearing designers like Thebe Magugu, The Attico, and spotlighting Nigerian fashion brands like Kilèntàr, where African heritage meets modern identity.

This conversation is about more than music.
It’s about African excellence, women in music, and the future of the continent’s creative power told by someone living it in real time.

2 years I ago I put out Femme Tech, my very first release which now has over 2 million streams. That’s wild considering it’s under a small, independent AND woman owned label Bae Electronica. Thank you so much cuties 💖. Since then I’ve done a couple of remixes whilst slowly working on some original music which is finally ready to share with you. I cannot wait for you to hear INTERSEXY on Nov 12 👽

It’s a blessing to befriend one of your favourite artists. It was heartwarming to spend time with @jackiequeens these past few days, as she was in town for @mutekmontreal. I’m grateful for the wonderful conversations and laughter. Thank you and I can’t wait till the next time
