Thank you to Martin Rodriguez @martin_like_the_tvshow of the University of Houston's Hines College of Architecture and Design @uhcoad for inviting me to give a virtual lecture to his Visual Studies IV seminar today. Many thanks to the students for their thoughtful questions and lively conversation!

Today I presented a version of my lecture, “The Architecture of Why,” reflecting on three recent projects and asking: What happens when architecture moves beyond organizing space and begins to question it?
“This isn’t architecture, this is art.”
Revisiting this commentary on my work, I explored projects that challenge the boundaries between control and desire, form and failure, object and person, and question what architecture can be, what it can do, and for whom.

As we fall deeper into purity culture, is Miami an alluring anecdote or a gilded escape?

We looked for the answer in strip clubs and steeples, in the tension between Art Basel and Amendment bans, in the studios of six South Florida artists working in charcoal, pole, camera, and canvas.

Miami’s soul lives in that friction: desire and shame enmeshed with capital and fantasy. And as the state cuts arts funding and bans books, one thing’s clear: sex and art will never be eradicated.
